McDavid, Matthews, Eichel, Laine Marner Werenski/Nylander/Tkachuk
- Aetherial

I was gonna argue that Nylander and Werenski should be a step above Tkachuk, but then I remembered this is his draft+1 season.

Damn impressive. When it looked like the Leafs would finish outside of the bottom-5 last season, pre-lockout, I was hoping for him.

So you wanna trade our best defenseman, for a forward, and then trade forwards for defense? What? Contradict yourself much?
- Acup2buff

If Ristolainen can bring me a 60-70 point + young player yes I do that.
and then yes I move Kane and Reinhart for d-men and bring up Guhle and sign Antipin.

It's a roster overhaul, but again I explore all avenues.

That's a big ask. There are just not many around and if you look at the list, I am not sure Risto fetches any of them. I am also not sure it would be worth it. Risto could be a #1 D, almost as hard to find as a good #1C.

I think pretty drastic changes can be made over the summer, especially with the expansion draft on the horizon, we'll see I guess

You are arguing against the wrong person maybe. I never asserted that Matthews was dominant.

I have only debated the Eichel was much better this year, and what I found to be a pretty incorrect description of the differences between Eichel and Matthews.

For the record, if I had to look at differences between the two, I would simplify it by saying say Eichel is going to be the more physically imposing, difficult to stop, player whereas Matthews will be the more dynamic guy. Both will be very good 1st line centers.

- Aetherial

Then we agree. My only issue is with those who are taking a sample size of less than one season and are anointing Matthews the clearly better player because of a 5% production gap. We need to look at these guys in 5-7 years to truly see if one is dominate over the other. But as of right now, these are equal players who at times will flip flop on production, but will probably not catch McDavid.

He either doesnt believe they can, which is alarming. Or he's saying its the vets in the room (something similar to what friedman said) which is still pretty bad.

Or just explore all avenues to make this team better. Regardless of player/position.

If you're ok with watching this team do this, more power to you.

Just curious are you not one of the ones who say Risto's underlying numbers are pretty terrible?

The Leafs have a lot of work to do. Even in this winning streak, Andersen, and some luck around their own net have bailed them out too often. They need at least 2 more dmen and one has to be a top pairing guy. Rielly has been mostly horrible this year.

Buffalo has some roster issues to address. I guess that is pretty obvious. There are still some good young, one great, young players there and some good vets also.

you can still line up the team rosters and see that they are comparable. The Leafs rookie seasons give them the short term edge, but I wouldn't say Buffalo is trending down.

Do you guys think you need a goalie?

- Aetherial

if you guys get a few vets on 1 year deals, you will be in great shape for the next step, assuming it's 1 or 2 playoff rounds this year

for the sabres, lehner is not bad, not great
as long as our 18 skaters are blah, we need great in net

problem is there is not many great goalies out there

- ImThatGuy

in one of his 30 thoughts pieces friedman touched on the rumoured disconnect between bylsma and the players. He suggested that if anything the disconnect is between the young players who are part of the core and the vets who are being "phased out".

If we're going to gut anyone it should be the dead weight who has the audacity to think they're on the same level as the guys we're trying to build around (looking at you gorges)
