Correct me if I'm wrong but didn't a few NHL players one of them being ovechkin say they would go anyway ? If so then the teams of those players would get involved then it's a shat show.

Which implies he'd probably let Backstrom and others go as well....

I think team owners will be in an interesting position.... if they say no to their players and suspend them if they disobey, they could make their star players "unhappy" and see them ask for a trade to an owner who would be more open to give the opportunity to his players.
