if I want to get ahead of myself over free agents like Zack MacEwen i will. I have suffered15 years of wussy hockey. Time for some John Wayne style hockey.(True Grit).
More Gudbrandson MacEwen and Virtanen types to go along with the Goldobin Dahlen & Baertschi types & hope when it all shakes out we have a nice mix of grit and skill. - Reubenkincade
Can't count MacEwen in wait till September and see how he makes out |

Looking past the 'Who doesn't want it Bowl' on Thursday lets see how well we can skate & keep up with the Oilers in last B2B games. Those 2 games r a good time for Goldy & BB & Boucher etc to show some offence. |

Yup. If he is playing I Utica and available for call up I am happy. As long as him and others that provide grit and toughness to our prospect.pool I am happy.
I will be patient, but will remind some on here that the skill guys need protection or we end up with more of the same.
I know you and others get that, some think get the skill guys first. They need to come into a safe environment IMO. |

Still not enough. The D is all around soft. No blue line presence. Team toughness in the neutral zone is non-existent. Retaliation or push back as a culture does not exist. The fore check does not invoke fear.
Canucks are a soft franchise. Top down. |

It amazes me how quickly a team gains control of the puck in their zone and in seconds are skating over our blue line. Then the defensive zone scheme is to wait for the opposition to make a mistake and hope to gain control. If the opposition doesn't make a mistake it usually ends up in a quality scoring chance.
We also need more snarl from the players who are on the ice the most. |

To add to this my idea is a pair each line then the 3rd wheel makes it all click.

True stars like Crosby McDavid Ovechkin Toews Keith Getzlaf Doughty Burns Weber Subban and even Karlsson etc have an aspect of snarl, let's hope Benning has that in mind when he drafts.
(I know, I was surprised I put Karlsson in the mix, he has shown some the last couple years) |

When the Sedins r behind the play & virtually all the rest r young it doesn't amaze me. Thats quite normal & to be expected. Eg the Leafs without Matthews would be no better albeit more offensive. |

TL already acknowledged that when talking about not wanting to have skill guys on fourth line. That is because top 9 aren't gritty and snarly enough.
I think they want that but not sure if they will find it in this draft. It's hard to find a talented enough player that has that snarl they need. Maybe they can get one by trade.
I know that's what JB wanted when he went after Lucic and Brower but was rejected. So you see MacEwen as his reach to fill that. I believe he will keep trying. |

For role players, cool. Go crazy with all of those guys(both the skill and grit group). Outside of maybe Dahlen, none of them have core player upside. At the end of the day, you can have all the quality role players you want on a team that has balls, but you need a group of stars to build around. It's easier to fill those holes than it does to find a core to build around.
Horvat is a start, let's see if OJ/Boeser/Demko and the 2017 can join him and the team can draft and develop enough to bring in a new core that can make this a perennial playoff team in the future. That's what matters more than anything.
And yes, I know you need depth to win, all I'm saying is that it's easier to find decent bottom 6 players through free agency and trade. When team the team is on the upswing again, depth can be found in a variety of ways. But this team isn't gonna win poop unless they have a talented core to build around. Even with the best role players you can find.
Just pray that they draft and develop well, and get some lottery luck in the upcoming years. Everything else(like role players) is just icing on the cake. |
