If they are so principled, and feel so strongly about it (a la Ovechkin), that they are willing to just up and leave their contracted NHL job to go play for their country, they should just forego the NHL and go to their country and play for their national team.

Do Canada and the United States have a men's "national team" that plays regularly? |

How much money does the NHL lose by shutting down for the Olympics? - YuenglingJagr
I don't know. I don't care. They shouldn't shut down the league for a tournament (no matter how many flags are wrapped around said tournament).

My business could send me to Canada, the Middle East, Europe, Russia, or any foreign nation that has refineries (i.e. anywhere on all 7 continents). In fact, we have service people who do this for a living (we've yet to sell and analyzer to Antarctica, though). They get called for jury duty just like everyone else, and they don't get out of it because their jobs demands they travel internationally.
Basically, playing a sport is a job just like any other ones. Yet I've never heard of a player missing a game for jury duty, and I find that too much to be a coincidence. - jmatchett383
Really? That surprises me. In my experience it is easy to get a deferment to a future time that can be worked out with your job and the court, especially in the circumstances you described. |

It's just weird that the owners, guys who are billionaires are crying over a bit of lost money.
Really are you that greedy? I dunno maybe I'm crazy. |

If they want to send a national team to the Olympics they should get one.
What? They don't have one? Oh, so let's just slap together a "team" of NHLers and head on over. Also, we'll shut down our product here for all this "nationalism"
yay

If they defer it to a different time, they could just be assigned to go to a different site at that time. They're on the road about 75% of the time, and it changes bi-weekly. They'd basically have to schedule jury duty during their paid vacation days. |

I'm guessing that every example I give will just be rationalized against. So lets just agree to disagree.

And exactly what opponents will this National Team play? Or do they just get into game shape by playing shinny against each other 80 times a year for $0? |

The military does it every day with the reserves. People leave their paid jobs to go and serve their commitment.
I think if enough players say F-it, I am going to play..the NHL is going to have to change their tune. Honestly I don't blame them...To represent your country on the Olympic stage could be one of the highlights of a career...I don't blame a single one of the guys if they walk out and go play. It is their life, I could care less what a contract says...just to stick around for the NHL to make their money off of some regular season games? No thanks...if you are good enough to be on your country's team, then go play. - JW98FlyerFan

I just think it's (frank)ed up that, "My team has a game coming up, can we reschedule it for 6 months from now," is not a valid excuse.
Sorry, just pisses me off that sports is more important that what "normal" people do. |

Other nations! It'll be great! They can "represent their country" (an apparently big source of pride for them) every day! Seems like a win-win to me.

When you think about it, its basically Roman Gladiator times just slightly more civilized.
God how I would love for the max salary to be $75,000/year. For the CEO's and players. Watch them weep openly. Nutter be sick like that. |

I might be going off of stale information here, but I assumed the owners were against the Olympics due to losing a star player to injury after investing x dollars and y cap dollars. ie: unmitigated risk. |

Looking at bikes again, something cheaper on the insurance scale.
Anyone know anything bout Honda-Shadow? 2013 and newer? - flyer_nutter
Why get insurance? Thats just feeding the socioeconomic beast.
Furthermore why get a vehicle that has a cumbustion engine? The oil industry is the true big evil. |

And it can happen to a doctor, too, if he has an operation scheduled for that day.
I don't see "playing a game/games" as a valid excuse. That's all. I don't think, "My men's league team is in the playoffs, can we reschedule for 2 months from now," would work. |

I'm guessing I'm not normal either. Because I would never have to serve on a jury during the school year. Neither would any other school administrator or essential school personnel.

Shocking that the company yes men are the same people demonizing the players that want to represent their country in the olympics.
