And it can happen to a doctor, too, if he has an operation scheduled for that day.
I don't see "playing a game/games" as a valid excuse. That's all. I don't think, "My men's league team is in the playoffs, can we reschedule for 2 months from now," would work. - jmatchett383
I get that.

As a business person I get it. Don't frank with my business. I don't care if it's $1 or $1M. - Scoob
But your business (The NHL) is founded on indentured servitude...your business does not exist without these players...you don't produce a commodity to sell without them...and at some point every company HAS to listen to their employees.
I just think if someone thinks so strongly to attend the NHL will figure out a way to "get by"..again, they DO ABSOLUTELY want to be in China for the 2022 Olympics... |

I'm guessing I'm not normal either. Because I would never have to serve on a jury during the school year. Neither would any other school administrator or essential school personnel.
Its nice to be special. - MBFlyerfan
You're a person whose job is to educate children or an administrator thereof. To me, that 100 times more important than someone playing a game. So that makes total sense. |

And who exactly will be paying the ridiculous travel and meal expenses that these players will incur? - jmatchett383
The national teams, of course. Or the national Olympic committee and sponsors - you know, the same fine folks who pay for the ice skaters, skiers, and curlers. |

But how does this have anything to do with shutting down a business to allow players to go to the olympics? Its not the same thing. Not even close.

And who exactly is going to sponsor a 70+ game season of a US/Canadian team that no one in the US/Canada will ever get to watch in person?
It just doesn't work in North America for more than short tournaments. |

Well, they are professionals, so "playing a game" = "working" so it's no different than any of the examples shown above. |

Really to me, the players have a union. If they feel strongly, they should hold out until its in their contracts that they are allowed to play.
Owners dont have a league without the players. |

Shocking that the company yes men are the same people demonizing the players that want to represent their country in the olympics.

God how I would love for the max salary to be $75,000/year. For the CEO's and players. Watch them weep openly. Nutter be sick like that. - flyer_nutter

It's just weird that the owners, guys who are billionaires are crying over a bit of lost money.
Really are you that greedy? I dunno maybe I'm crazy. - flyer_nutter
A lot of the owners are actually losing money anyway, so they don't want to lose more.
It's not surprising that the NHL bungled this whole thing by springing it on the players without having discussions with them though. League is run by idiots. |

What rest of the money? When salaries are that low ticket prices will plummet, as will merchandise prices.

Last I looked these players get paid a poop ton of money. I don't recall indentured servants getting paid at all.

Infrastructure, education, healthcare. - flyer_nutter
Oh, so the NHL should generate all of that money, and it shouldn't go to the players or the owners? It should go to infrastructure, education and healthcare? You have a naïve sense of reality. |
