Excellent point. The players can take time off and go fight for their countries. I'd be 100% down with that. - Scoob
What about jury duty? Why don't athletes ever have to serve jury duty duting the season? I don't get out of jury duty simply because I have a job, and they shouldn't either.
Also, how do people on long-term juries keep their jobs? Or feed their families? Did the people on the OJ Simpsons trial get paid their regular salaries while they were out of work for 6 months? |

Actually depends on the company. I would get paid.
And who is to say these guys don't get called during the offseason?

I'm not saying they don't. But if I called up the courthouse and said, "Yeah...how about I just go in 6 months instead of now," I doubt they'd be all about it. |

You can get out of long-term jury duty if it will be an employment hardship. I did it. I didn't get out of jury duty all together though (nor did I want to), they just tossed me back into the pool and I got chosen for a short case. |

And hey, Mr. NHLer, if you really want to play for your country, leave the NHL (or better yet, don't even bother trying to get in) and just go play for your country's national team. |

17 days is a shutdown
4 days is a break (a ridiculous one, but a break nonetheless) |

So Sidney Crosby, Claude Giroux, Connor McDavid, etc. should go play in the ECHL or some other goon league for less money than I make so they can do something for a 3-week period every 4 years? |

Sorry but it isn't even remotely similar to the military. Do those businesses shut down while those reservists leave? No, they don't. Businesses have a legal obligation to allow those reservists to fulfill their service.
Lemme see you try to leave your job for two weeks just because you want to. Go ahead.
Im going to tell my business to shut down for two weeks so I can go and perform my exact same job for another person or business for free. Yeah, Im sure that will fly, especially if I tell them its for my country. - MBFlyerfan
I don't disagree with your points, but the problem is with the NHL...the people are their business...they don't have a business without them...so the players have more leverage here than someone just not going to work...and lets be honest, the league does not have to shut down...lots of young talent in the AHL that could fill in for a few games for the players that aren't there...not ideal...but there is no shut down...bottom line is that the is a BS move by the NHL...you damn well bet they want to be in China for the next Olympics, so this is just the NHL being stupid again...that is why it is not even considered a sport worth paying attention to by most people, it is a niche league run by a bunch of rich owners who don't have anything else to do with their money...the sport is too expensive for most people to even play...and the whole discussion with moving it to the summer Olympics is just as bad...not many professional teams can keep a sheet of ice in the warm weather...there is almost no chance a country can put together rinks that would not be slush...it is not the same a putting a basketball court together in the summer...the comparison is not even close. |

My business could send me to Canada, the Middle East, Europe, Russia, or any foreign nation that has refineries (i.e. anywhere on all 7 continents). In fact, we have service people who do this for a living (we've yet to sell and analyzer to Antarctica, though). They get called for jury duty just like everyone else, and they don't get out of it because their jobs demands they travel internationally.
Basically, playing a sport is a job just like any other ones. Yet I've never heard of a player missing a game for jury duty, and I find that too much to be a coincidence. |

If they are so principled, and feel so strongly about it (a la Ovechkin), that they are willing to just up and leave their contracted NHL job to go play for their country, they should just forego the NHL and go to their country and play for their national team.
Put your money where your mouth is or stfu. |
