And his playoffs really helped his cause too. - Wetbandit1
yeah that solidified it, but early on he jumped to 3 pre WJC on most charts. After that he was a lock at 2...then it was fighting Matthews for 1 the whole way.
Started the year iffy on peoples list 3-7. But few months into the season he was Top 3 everywhere you looked |

I guess I exaggerated saying he wasn't top10...
but my point was that if we were gonna tank again, it was for Matthews
It wasn't a McEichel situation where we knew there was TWO franchise guys - jdfitz77
It was Matthews and Chychrun as 1-2 to start the year. People were thinking Chychrun was another Ekblad. But he had a bad bad development year, no different than Liljegren this year (potentially will be dropping even further by draft day out of the top 5)
Laine and Puju were always near the top but to start the year puljujarvi was the Finnish sniper to look out for. Once the season started Laine stole the show start to finish from him |

Definitely. During the season, before the WJC it was he and JP, with the inside line to JP. And then after it was nearly unanimous. There were still a few people not sold and had JP higher, but like 98% had Laine. |

I was high on Laine early on. Avs started the year terrible so I figured it was lottery time. Avs fan base has an awesome group of guys called Eurolanche who are always watching over seas guys. They were hyping Laine early.
You should check out Eurolanche if you aren't familiar. Smart smart hockey guys.

He's oblivious to the elements. But this cold rain/snow combo we got going on is literally the worst. Plus I dropped my gloves in the only puddle in my whole driveway earlier and they haven't dried yet |

I'm sure it would be a different story if Jack eichel and Sam we're the ones that planned the optional skate

That's all fair
but pertaining to the discussion from before...
At the time we made the Kane trade (2015 deadline) and when we traded for O'Reilly at the 2015 draft...
Laine was just a good prospect in that group that was a clear step down from Matthews
So our choices were:
1) make sure the deals NOW, for players we feel can be part of our core going forward
OR
2) tank again, hoping we can grab Matthews
I'm pretty positive there wasn't a 3rd option of tank for someone other than Matthews, bc NOBODY has Laine in his class when we traded for Kane & then O'Reilly
Looking back...
Yeah, of course I'd have loved to get one of them
But landing in the Leafs or Jets draft slot would've been very slim imo
I'm happy we decided it was time to start winning again
Tanking for 2 years was plenty long enough for me |

We BADLY need defense...
but Murray is a "take the best available" kind of guy
I'm thinking if there isn't a defenseman there he likes a lot,
we try to trade the pick for a young defenseman |

at the time of the ROR deal, Laine was not even on the radar as how good he is. It really is hindsight at this point. Sometimes it takes luck to turn a franchise around with how how things fall into place with you.
Such as the Oilers stealing McDavid away from you guys. Sorry boys to bring that up.
I wouldn't be so doom and gloom about this draft....there isnt a Mceichatthews feat Laine in it but there is still a lot of good talent. You have eichel, no different how the Avs have MacK. You have a huge piece of the future nailed down. You dont need a franchise altering piece you need pieces the help compliment the talent you already have.

In the Top 10...I dont like Liljegren but I really like Valimaki, the both will be in that 5-10 range. Out of all the D int he 1st round, I like Hague the most but its ranked later on in the late teens early 20s
I actually dont like either Patrick or Nico at the top picks, they really had discouraging draft. Tippett is my favourite fwd |

But we dont need a free draft pick for players at deadline
Also in Sam Reinharts draft class " stirs pot" |
