Pictures from inside the Leafs back offices showed Babcock used Corsi, zone exits, and zone denials. These are things the fancy stats community have been pushing like crazy for years. Hockey ppl and fancy stats are looking at the same damned thing. - Matt_Henderson
Advanced stats are lame and suck the fun out of the game |

Hendo
Use them yes, however use them in conjunction with what they see, and relate them to the intangibles that effect said stats. Do you really think that if something is working for a coach, but the unicorn stats suggest it isn't, that said coach is going to change it??? |

And yet most teams that hired fancy stat guys have already fired them. |

As I see the Kris Russell debate is once again raging, I've recently come across some interesting perspectives on Russell and stats in general. I urge anyone interested in looking at another perspective to give these a read.

At the bottom of that second article, you can find breakdowns of what offensive and defensive plays they value and see as negatives. - MaximumBone

Your loss. The Journal article features an explanation as to why Kris Russell is underrated as a defender by the stats crowd. |

I know this wouldn't fly with the fancy stat fanboys (and girls) but so called fancy stats are only useful within the context of validating what is already known or assumed not for decision making. I think a lot of the second pairings good by eye but not by fancy stat issue partially comes from fancy stats not being able to deferrenciate on shot types. That scond pairing has combined for 379 blocked shots compared to 306 by the first pairing. And before you jump on the ya they block more because they can't clear the zone so are hemmed in more default knee jerk comment, think about how you block shots. Most of these blocked shots are from farther out attempts usually. Perhaps both Russell and Sekera realize, like we do, that they aren't Pronger. But they are intelligent players so they play their zone in a safe, solid as they can perimeter and angle game to try to promote the oppposition into taking their shots from farther out as they know they are more blockable and if it gets through Talbot is there for a high percentage save. So sure theres more shots against on our second pairing than on our first pairing. They just aren't top pairing guys. Consider this also, the second pairing has 74 take-aways while the top pairing has 57. Of the top 4 D-men Russell has the least give-aways. |
