This is the year Ovi hoists the cup over his head.
Regarding the Sabres, I am despondent. Good word. Despondent. We are caught in between again. Not crappy enough to get a top 3 but not good enough to get into the playoffs. I have been a Sabres fan since 1974. For those of you who complain about the Sabres sucking in the past 5 or 6 years -
. Imagine being a fan of them virtually your entire life.
Not sure why GMTM is willing to die on the Blysma' sword. We went backwards this year - end of story. It's professional sports. Somebody should get fired. If Murray doesn't fire Disco then Murray deserves to be fired IMO. New GM would then fire Disco - SabreWest
U definitely could be right about the Caps
If I had to bet $$$, they'd be my pick
Very, very deep team
And idk why Holtby is getting more Vezina props. He's my pick

As far as the Sabres go...
We had just about everything go wrong for us this year
If our luck changes next year, we're in fine shape
Look at Columbus & Calgary for examples
C-bus had crazy injuries & Calgary got brutal goaltending
Those were non issues this year, and now those teams are in the playoffs
We need to fix our defense
For me, that means getting TWO top4 guys
Which I believe is possible
If we do JUST that, and stay relatively healthy...
we are a playoff team next season imo
If we can additionally add another scoring forward,
say Nash from NyR...
I think we can challenge for 2nd in our division
Tampa should bounce back & take 1st
Montreal, Boston & Ottawa do not impress me much
I think they all take a step back
And the Leafs will take a big step back unless they can make moves on defense as well
My lineup that gets us fighting for 2nd (with Montreal)...
(Nash)-Eichel-Okposo
Kane-Reinhart-Bailey
Foligno-O'Reilly-Ennis
Girgensons-Larsson-Gionta
Deslauriers
*top 3 lines all get basically equal icetime, plus PP & PK for top guys
*Nash acquired from NyR for a couple picks, they'll be desperate to move him bc of expansion & they need Cap room for Shattenkirk
*Moulson bought out
*Carrier taken by Vegas
*Nylander starts in Rochester
(Brodin)-Ristolainen
McCabe-(Manson)
Antipin-Bogosian
Gorges
Faulk
*i doubt we can get rid of all the "dead" weight ppl want us to, so Gorges & Bogosian are still here. Can't afford to buy them out if we do Moulson
*trades for 2 guys like Brodin & Manson, doesn't have to specifically be them. Fasching + for one of them, use our 1st to get the other
*Guhle starts in Rochester if we can't move the dead weight. And that's not a horrible thing. If Bogosian & Gorges play poorly, he'll be up soon enough.
***if we can't trade for a 2nd defenseman...
then I'm ok signing Alzner, or just moving up Guhle
Lehner
-Ullmark
*fingers crossed, sign Cal Petersen to start in Rochester

Boston doesn't impress you ?
I thought they were about done before this year but they are still one of the best teams in the NHL
They have the 4th and 10th leading goal scorers, and the best line in hockey currently. On defense they have McAvoy, Krug, and Carlo as young top 4 D men, and some prospects on the way in terms of forwards.
Hate to say it but they are going to be around for a while

That core isn't getting any younger, though, and none of those prospects, while good, strike me as "build your franchise around me" type of players. They're going to be a pain in the ass, but not great.

They are great now. Just had some bad goaltending earlier this year.
The post I was responding to was in terms of next year. They certainly will still contend for a top 3 spot next year.
If anything it's Ottawa and Montreal that fall out
Tampa, Boston, Toronto/Florida/Ottawa/Montreal/Buffalo competing for #3 IMO
Did not see it posted anywhere, but anyone else even more pissed now that Marchand only got a two game suspension. I felt it definitely should have been 3 games. What does suspending a guy for 2 games at the end of the season do if the games don't matter. They probably appreciated the rest before the playoffs. Then he comes back for game one and scores the game winner. F the NHL and everyone in charge of supplemental discipline.

Same thing happened with Duncan Keith a few years ago.

The sooner we come to grips with the fact that stars (even repeat offenders), especially on good teams, get special treatment, the better it will be for our own sanity. In two years, if the Sabres are one of the better teams in the league, and Jack Eichel runs someone into the boards from behind giving him a concussion, the league will hand out a suspension that will have the fanbases of 30 other teams. crying for more as well.

worst part is when marchand does another dirty hit this post season, probably won't even be called a penalty

plus they got picks 13, 14 and 15 from 2015 draft ready to compete this fall - homiedclown
Still early but as of now those picks couldve been better and made them that much scarier..
That's probably the sabres biggest fail right now imo...Luck.. how has not one player exceeded expectations from their draft status.
Jack- Expected to be great.. is great
Sam- Expected to be good..pretty good
risto- Expected to be good..is little better than good
We NEEEED one (or two) of bailey, baptiste, fasching, carrier, borgen, fitz, guhle, estiphan. pu, asplund, hagel, malone to be a staple in the second line of fwd or d..

Bills restricted free agent RB Mike Gillislee visited the Patriots.
In an effort to sign all the running backs, New England also hosted Dolphins restricted free agent RB Damien Williams. Gillislee was given the lowest tender by Buffalo, but unlike last year with former UDFA Chris Hogan, signing him would cost the Patriots a fifth-round pick because that is where he was selected in the 2013 draft. The pick makes it unlikely they give Gillislee an offer sheet, but New England is still clearly looking to add to their backfield.
That's why I say it's not as easy as just adding a D man and subtracting a piece of dead weight or two.
Tampa and Toronto each are young, have superstars, and have depth. Boston is still relevant. Florida has talent and depth.
It's not just a natural progression of 15 and 23. - sbroads24
Spot on and i love risto more than anyone else but when you watch suter, burns, and Pietrangelo and the impact they have on big games.. he is certainly on the right track but we need that next step soon (not just point wise)..
