Not really. Same as Vrbata. Given his opportunity by the coach has one of the best seasons ever. Coach takes that away, he sucks. Goes to Arizona, given another good opportunity and does well. On the coach. - manvanfan
I have been thinking about Vrbata for a while now. The Sedins and Edler both have looked this year like they were showing symptoms of whatever disease he had the last year he was in Vancouver. Acute apathy, lethargy, seeming to have lost the will to live.
And yet there he is down in the desert scoring goals and doing his offense thing. If Willie hadn't refused to let him play with the Sedins that second season, does he go into the same tailspin? If he produces even at 80% of what he did in his first year, does he get extended here for another year or two? Does Benning still go out and sign Erickson if things had worked out that way? |

He is better than the guy currently recognized as the best, but I believe Bobby Orr is best ever. - Reubenkincade
Nothing he couldn't or wouldn't do.
Never saw him whining in an era tougher than these pansy times. |

I don't believe Willie was fired solely because of the team's record and failure to make the playoffs. He was let go because many of his decisions were so obviously flawed.
The Sedins did look way past their prime when they were anchored down with Sutter, Megna, and Chaput. They looked more like their usual selves when they were playing with actual offensive talent such as Granlund and Goldobin.
Both his 'system' and the defensive structure we heard so much about last September were ineffective. By the end of the season players had abandoned it and were playing their own individual games.
The special teams were a disaster all year with only minor tweaks here and there. Expecting it to improve without substantial intervention was foolish.
Willie seems like a good guy and we wish him well, but it really was time for him to go. Management couldn't sell another year of his ideas to the players let alone the fans. - YeOldTimer

I think he would have had more value at the TDL with a better year not hurting his pocketbook. Then, he might have said yes for a contender instead of that FU list he gave JB. |

I'm missing something here, it been twice now that you have criticized others for speaking in absolutes, and yet here you are speaking in absolutes about Willie as if you are more qualified than those that speak favourably about him...is that not kind of hypocritical? - Makita
you totally missed what I was saying
absolutes are statements like "No coach can...." Limiting statements. Now re read the original post |

The Flames thread has always been quiet, even a decade ago. However, it really collapsed after that Flames/Hawks series it seems and never recovered. |

With you on that. Hearing Nedved at draft interview praise Jagr as better then him sealed it for me. I thought oh boy the Pens added another hammer and sort of pulled a Bure on the draft. They will get him to come over. |
