Malkin and Stamkos are not generational.

And Matthews is ?

You could make an argument that Malkin is better than Sid.

Not one I would make personally, but in my eyes the best players of this past generation entering their 30's are Sid, Geno and OV

- sbroads24

Can't argue with that at all. I still like Sid over Malkin though.

(frank) Stamkos.

I think both are going to be.

All depends on definition.

In the past decade, who have been the 3-5 players that have dominated?

Ovi, Sid, Malkin, Lidstrom, Kane?

Edit- maybe Jagr, Thornton.

Maybe guys like Lidstrom, Niedermayer, Pronger are technically the generation before

Let's use this as a reference for people throwing out generational , Elite etc

HF

Generational Talent
– a player for the ages, one who can do things with a puck that no other player would even contemplate doing. Very, very few players will be deserving of this rating, probably one per decade.

Defense: Bobby Orr
Forward: Wayne Gretzky
Goaltender: Patrick Roy

9. Elite Talent – possesses the potential for greatness, a perennial All-Star throughout his career.

Defense: Drew Doughty, Duncan Keith, P.K. Subban
Forward: Jamie Benn, Evgeni Malkin, Patrick Kane
Goaltender: Carey Price, Jonathan Quick, Henrik Lundqvist

8. First-Line Forward/ No. 2 Defenseman / No. 1 Goaltender
– players with definite skill that might be just a cut below elite status, but still possessing All-Star potential.

Defense: Brent Seabrook, John Carlson, Roman Josi
Forward: Daniel Sedin, Ryan O’Reilly, Bobby Ryan
Goaltender: Corey Crawford, Marc-Andre Fleury, Cory Schneider

7. Second-Line Forward/ No. 3-4 Defenseman / Journeyman No. 1
Goaltender – players not quite good enough to play on the top line or pairing on a regular basis, but still possessing enough talent to contribute offensively, defend with some authority, or competently play the goaltender’s position for long stretches.

Defense: Kevin Shattenkirk, Alec Martinez, Jeff Petry
Forward: Tomas Tatar, Ryan Kesler, James Neal
Goaltender: Devan Dubnyk, Jaroslav Halak, Mike Smith

6. Third-Line Forward/ No. 5-6 Defenseman / Backup Goaltender – generally speaking, players whose game is defensively-oriented, or whose abilities aren’t quite good enough to land full-time duty on the second line, top two defensive pairings, or the No. 1 goaltending position

How could they be generational if they're not better than McDavid?

I exepct a step back as well but nothing like the Avs team you mention. I think they will be in the mix for the playoffs and health and luck will determine if they make playoffs or not. Just like most every other team.

One side note .... I am not a fan of Murray at all. Don't know why but he seems like an arrogant douche. I think Buffalo would be better with another GM.

- Matthews_Auston

I agree. I don't think the Leafs will end up like the 2014 Avs either. It's just the point is that the Avs fan base didn't expect the results that they got after their Cinderella season, either. They have 1st, 2nd, and 3rd overall pick in their offense and it produced magic for only one season.

As for Murray, he is arrogant, and it looks like he's been knocked down a peg or two. We might be better finding someone else, but I'd be willing to give him another year now that he's had a reality check. Disco needs to go, though.

Drafting Mike Weber eventually made us bad enough for Jack Eichel.

So in reality, Darcy actually drafted Jack Eichel

Kessel as a flawed player, lol. That's rich.

When did Eichel throw Bylsma under the bus? He went out of his way to not do that.

You're right. It's silly to expect a team that overachieved to maybe take a step back the next season, or at the very least, not improve. It's never happened before. Not once.

Jesus Christ.

There's a saying that springs to mind here "act like you've been there before".

- Wetbandit1

Kessel? I don't know. He couldn't crack the USA WC roster. He was traded two years ago for pennies on the dollar. TML have to eat some contract too. He plays on Pitts third line. He's paid like the "man" but is no leader. Last on the ice, first off the ice, kinda guy. Need any more?

Eichel questioned systems and his teammates publicly. That is well documented.

Not sure how you define "overachieved". The young Leafs blew a bunch of leads this year. Their youth was in full display. With more experience, those L's and 15 OTL's will become W's.

Nobody is planning a parade. But, yes there is excitement. FOr the record, I think the Leafs will be fortunate to win one game vs the Caps.

I think I would put Crosby in that class but no one else, at least not yet. Crosby has adjusted his game to put team first, he is light years ahead defensively where he was when he first joined the league. Sacrificed points for team, IMO.

I just don't think you can limit it to one player per decade, if they are deserving they are deserving.

Agreed on Crosby I'll give you that ..
