have always felt, especially in hockey, that the 'c' is important and having the right player as captain means more chance of success on the ice...

it's not the be-all, end-all but as pointed out in the blog, during the past 25 years Buffalo was relevant only twice and both times they had captains who defined and lead their teams...

in absence of that, I believe there's a correlation between the vanilla captains and a vanilla teams of those years

In a nutshell, here's the problem with giving O'reilly or Eichel the C right now.

- Jack is still maturing and may not be ready for it as of yet
-O'Reilly is signed for a long time and you can't give it to him now then take it away when Jack is ready for it.
-Sabres will re-sign Gionta on the cheap for next year and allow him to keep it for one more year, then revisit in 2019.

Maybe they should do a battle for the puck type of thing...a little one-on-one and whomever gets it and retains it for a specified amount of time or gets the puck to a specified area wins the 'c'
