I doubt Cal cares. I'd bet his priorities are (1) Who will give him ice time in the NHL (2) Who can I win with. Every team he considers signing with will have their own star on it and will pay him the same contract that the Sabres will offer, which will be max ELC.

It's a combo of both.

If you want to be successful, you can't plan on having everything go your way. Injuries are going to happen to 90% of the teams, most involving key pieces.

You have to overcome them.

The Leafs were lucky with injuries, but also unlucky in close games/shootouts.

We were unlucky, but also really bad in other areas

You're talking about the defending Stanley Cup Champion Team. The only other team remotely close to us in man games lost this year that made the playoffs was ANA...a perennial playoff team with an older veteran group. WPG lost a lot of players due to injury as well...how did they do?
