Nobody is talking about talent here. And no, as of now Eichel is not on the same level as McDavid and Matthews.... And Matthews isn't on the same level as McDavid. - As_I_See_It
We have none of the talent mentioned in this post. |

Eichel - 11th in points per game
Matthews - 29th
Matthews is great, love him as a player, but Eichel is no slouch while playing on a disaster of a team |

I disagree, management has to take some heat for this, they're the ones who wanted to "compete" and thereby play veteran players and employ a coach who threw this kid under the bus on one occasion.
Just disappointed they're really starting over from the 2015 draft not the 2014 draft. Having Boeser, Demko and Juolevi out of three drafts now is just blah. Great young prospects but so many missed opportunities. - LeftCoaster
Not disagreeing about this past yr, but he played 1 yr and packed it in. He's only 22. That's not even giving it a chance. Icetime was an excuse, he misses his momma.
I really liked what he did this yr and he would have gotten increased icetime and more responsibility next yr, but he pulled the plug. What does that say?

Which goes back to management.
Get ready for year 2 of the rebuild folks! - VanHockeyGuy
This management group needs to be fired for all their missteps over the past three years, they've had a tremendous opportunity to rebuild the franchise and they've just done such a poor job. Much like Murray in Buffalo, too many misses when the chances were there. |

meh, we retain his rights. Going over to the KHL, in a winning culture, playing 25 minutes a night won't be the worst thing for him. Instead of playing 14-17 minutes a night with guys like Biega and Larsen and having your confidence shattered everytime you make a mistake. I don't know why everyone sees this as an overall bad thing. We still retain his rights. Let him mature at him and play big minutes in the KHL - Codes1087
You really think he'll come back so easily when he's going to get paid big bucks for easier work and more ice time over there? The whole thing is really strange considering how much he sounded like he wanted to be here at the exit press conference. |

Oh I know we aren't talking about talent but no player should be able to wheel that kind of power to have a coach and manager fired.

There's a few issues with the KHL development approach.
For one, it's a much less physical league on the big ice with very different systems.
Two: We lose some of his cheapest playing years and the opportunity to develop and built chemistry with a new team.
More importantly, If he does choose to return, the same issues will remain. He would not have otherwise spend the time getting in shape, learning English and NHL strategies.
Moreover, say he does decide to return for his 'prime years'. He would do so as an RFA and thus would make pennies on the dollars when contrasted against what he would otherwise make in the KHL.
All in all, I would say that his Canuck days are done.

What a PR nightmare for the Canuck's. Not exactly how you want to approach the off season when one of the pieces Linden say's he want's to "build around" tells the team to FU. Pretty much egg in his face.
The whole management team can take ownership of this epic fail, not just the coach. Kind of why these Ralph Krueger rumors make sense. - VanHockeyGuy

They should've played the poop outta him from January on, but whatever, just poor management of a prospect again. They'll be fine without him but he was 7th in average icetime for dmen this year I just read.....miss management. |

There was no rush to sign with Vancouver or KHL, I think he wanted to go back. If he really wanted to be in the NHL, he would wait for a new coach to be announced.
I dont think he was mishandled at all last year, they were tough on him like they needed to be and he couldnt handle it. Maturity will come soon enough, I think Sobotka said it brought him back, Radulov needed it, hopefully Tryamkin realizes it |

That's the weirdest part. He points to ice time as his reason? The coach not giving him enough ice time is gone |

Yes I saw that too....he was both their best dman and their worst on occasion. But that's where you just play the poop outta him and TEACH him on the fly. What's the difference when you're a poop team anyways, again, just disappointing how they manage this club. |

He is only 22 though, we have to remember this. We had lots of good years left. He signs 1 or 2 years in the KHL, the Canucks bring in some really good pieces, who knows what he does. Either way, this is the risk you take when you draft Russians.

Too bad willie was fired sooner maybe this could have be prevented. This is a huge step back. Just lost one of our better young players who had top pairing potential. |

I think the Russians are very persuasive like that. They can promise him all the money he wants, tell him he has a great shot at the Olympics, all the motherland glory. I dont know if there was anything TL/JB can do to compete with that, you want to make promises but also not hand him everything
Kinda gives legs to (I think it was) Don's story that he wasnt well liked/received in the room. Had a one foot in, one foot out mentality from day 1 with that KHL clause. - WhiteLie
Not well liked or just not appreciated enough. Kid busted his a$$ out there. Protected players as best he could and was always a good teammate on the ice. Remember him pushing guys to the bench when hurt too. Anyway something is a miss here or lost in translation. Money and role are key.
KHL clause was to protect him from AHL burial. Look at JV and Pedan. He came to play in the NHL. If that's not wanted or appreciated. Then thanks. I got other options. Nothing wrong with that.
He knows Guddy is back and Stecher is the darling for young D so what role will he have? Was it properly explained?
His experience was that no matter how he busted his arse everyone else got more ice time. Like Sbisa and Hutton. Beiga and Larsen even at times. With no indication that Edler or Tanev will be traded sucking up top four minutes then it's a crowded blue line. Even more with OJ coming to compete for a 3rd pairing.
Maybe he's being told wait and see how it plays out. Then they will come to you with appreciation offers. It's a good tactic for his situation. |

Regardless, this looks bad. He wasn't a liabilty and why Larsen got 1 minute of ice time is beyond me. What a clusterf*ck! - Marwood
For sure it looks bad, and I've been pretty critical of management, but in this case I'm not sure what more they could do. They already signed him to a contract that made it impossible to send him to the AHL (which I've never heard of before).

This is an easy out for us to blame management or even WD for Tree leaving but this is on him. If the reports were true that he came to camp out of shape, that's on him. He's a rookie, he needed to prove that he was good enough for a spot. I'm not going to say that he didn't play well but him bolting to the KHL after one season shows his character. This is the NHL, the best league in the world, what did he expect? To play 25min a game, PP time as an unproven rookie?
Van is going to miss him, but feck him! - Kaynine
Your right for the start of the year. Down the stretch he proved he could handle big minutes and WD wouldn't give them. This is on WD first and foremost, Trauma secondonly for not giving the Canucks another shot under a new coach, |
