Common denominator being BOTH were Lawyers, smart guys. Not some farm boy from Alberta. - VanHockeyGuy
Sure, but Gillis was also a lawyer. To criticize the GM selections over the past years is just silly if you dont take into who was available at the time and if there were interested candidates. Some guys are farm boys with zero education and do very well, and some dont. Even guys with great track records do poopty work |

Yes I heard ...it raises the question .. if a Tree leaves for Russia does the fan base make a sound ?
I guess the answer is yes |

When I said "look deeper", I was referring to why they were the best under Gillis, I mean the real reason. Because of players he had nothing to do with in terms of bringing them in.
Sure he added some good depth players, even stole a PP specialist in Ehrhoff from SJ because they had cap trouble, but the real reason they were good was because of players he didn't bring in.
He gets depth credit, but they had no chance if they didn't have the guys Burke drafted and Nonis stealing Lu from Florida because Keenan had a hard-on for Bert. - LeftCoaster

Sure it does.
As it stands, that was by and large, a good draft on Benning's part in theory.
In practice however, through poor trades, poor asset management, poor development and poor coaching, it no longer is.
Out of seven picks, 3 are no longer with the team and two are assured busts with the remaining two still questions marks at the NHL level. One of which was 6th overall for Christ sakes.
There's absolutely no way to justify that. - Whiskey-Tango
There's one very easy way actually, you just say "3 out of 7 appear to be NHL players". That's actually a successfull draft. What he did with those players after the draft doesn't actually determine whether we look back and say it was good. I agree that if a sucessfull draft means "helping your team the most" that you're right. my definition is "picking NHL calibre players with your draft picks" is a successful draft. Otherwise, how can we say Gillis' last draf twas good? he didn't choose to move or not move any players, or how Horvat was developed. Seems like we want to say "Got to hand it to Gillis, that was a hell of a draft" |

Come on buddy I was just joking, of course it doesn't go just one way, half the fun is trying to get the other guy, or girl, or weird guy in Nuck4U's case, to see things your way.
I like you, you're a good person in real life if I were to take a stab at things. If I were to guess I'd say your a good family man, you're a good husband and father. You care about things, sometimes too much.
Don't ever think I don't respect you, I most certainly do! You've got a tough task being a ref on here. Sometimes I wish you were more assertive, if I had one complaint that'd be it.
It's just a bunch of opinions...the one thing that bonds us all is we want the same thing. The path is the entertaining debate. - LeftCoaster
No ones weirder then you Hefty with your flip flopping amnesia. I'll get back to you after your lunch maybe you will know how to discuss then. In the meantime, I will rehearse my Rodney Dangerfield lines so it makes all sense to you. |

Hey, I liked Tree just as much as you! I was seriously angry when I was told how much he was disliked in the room. My initial reaction was "screw the country club." But this is on Tree...He demanded first line minutes, wanted Willie gone, refused time in the AHL. then, after Benning fires Willie and promises a bigger role next year he takes his ball and runs back to Russia. I think peoples hate may be a bit misdirected here. - CanuckDon
