To me, Stecher earned his spot. Biega/waivers affected the numbers game but it was pretty obvious when he got 20+ minutes in his first game what everyone thought of him. If Juolevi looks like he can easily 16+ minutes a night then I keep him around.

Otherwise there are plenty of D in the system and journeymen you can bring in to get you to 10 D

- WhiteLie

Don't know about that one.

this year we had:

Edler
Tanev
Gudbrason
Hutton
Sbisa
Tryamkin
Stetcher
Larson
Biega

with Pedan and others recalled, but i don't think they got into game action.

so next year, assuming Sbisa is grabbed by Vegas and Larson is let go, that leaves 7 at this point.

D are at a premium imo.
Not exactly easily found.

We all felt that it was time for Bieksa to move on, despite his heart.

I think Carol's point was more that leadership and veteran presence can go a long way to mentor the youth (like he's doing in Ana).
I think this is why it would be folly to jetison every vet (Sedins, Edler, etc) and expect the team to have any traction.

A good balance is key.

- dbot

My point wasn't in any way aimed at Carol, just used her comment as a reference.

When the veterans are setting a very poor example with their play, do they still have any value as a mentor? Do we really need them around to teach the younger guys how you ride the bike after being -3 in a 4-2 loss?

What exactly do you suppose Stecher learned from Edler this past season?

Maybe mentors aren't quite so important when your rookies have higher levels of skill, determination and confidence.

I haven't enjoyed their style fo many many years. I wishe we were faster and harder to play against. I really don't like the cycle game
- VANTEL

I would agree, but we still managed to be competitive and successful, while playing with a boring style of hockey.

Hi guys. Long time eater, first time poster.

Listen, the canucks need to get bigger. I mean really big. They need players that possess obese talent, inflated skills, and a meaty portion of aggression.
This distended rebuild is a result of a thin draft record and roly-poly attitude from a broad group of lard-headed managers.

Kyle Wellwood, Dustin Penner, Keith Tkachuck, Vladimir Krutov, and of course my boy, Byfuglien. These are the types of players that have the weight and girth to be difference makers.

Oh poop, half my taco just fell on my keyboard. Give me a sec...

I had counted 8, but forgot Sbisa could be claimed, so the bolded I think are your starting 7 next season. Then there is Pedan (13 NHL games), McEneny (saw game action this year), Subban (who sucks), Chatfield (who VANTEL likes), and then 91 pending UFA defenseman who can be your #7-8.

From there I think you can find 3-4 D who are fringe enough to go down to Utica and be recalled in the event of an injury. This team doesnt need quality, it isnt going anywhere. Juolevi IMO needs to position himself in the #5 slot or better to justify sticking around, or at the very least #6+PP

If they want to put some weight on Juolevi, they should send him to Lefty's place for the summer.

My wife would make him skinny with her healthy cooking, it's the pub and golf course with their beer and chicken wings

That's the question i suppose.
Are veteran intangibles measurable? i'm not sure, but i am leaning towards yes.

Disagree there, i think we need quality everywhere throughout the lineup and i also think OJ could provide some on the backend.

I do agree with the next point though, about OJ being 5-6 with PP time.

Vancouver is (frank)ed up. I get Jagr playing at his age making 4 mil showing the kids how hard you need to work . We have two guys at 14 mil teaching the exact same thing

Overpay much?

I think this post looks like a good place to make my statement.

I have been extremely lenient to pretty much all the Canuck posters in here. I allowed guys to mock and criticize because at first it was all done in jest.

Well things have been getting a little out of hand lately, these actions look bad on Carols Blog and me as your ref, so I am going to start being a little more heavy handed, the personal attacks on some posters is terrible, and it has to stop. Regardless if they speak in biblical riddles or proclaim to be a brain surgeons or Walmart greeters or Alberta's gift to engineering, people make opinionated statements and as long as they are not in contravention of the CoC it's permitted.

6. Respect your fellow HockeyBuzzers What isn't permitted is....quote---"No name calling. And you’re not being clever if you say “any moron knows” or “only an idiot doesn’t understand.” You’re being disrespectful. Talk more about hockey and less about each other. Although playful banter is allowed, that does not mean anything goes, if the banter breaks any part of the code of conduct, it isn’t playful and it is not acceptable. When “Player X stinks" turns into "You stink" you've crossed the line. And yes, the Moderators decide where the line is.

7. No trolling and no feeding the trolls
All posters are welcome in all threads, regardless of team loyalty, to discuss hockey. But do not post merely to inflame or disrupt.

Do not engage those who are out to disrupt the thread. Simply hit the post report button "!" and the Mods will deal with it from there.

Do not correct the spelling and grammar of other posters. Their errors may make you question how much credence to give their opinions, that’s up to you, but correcting their lapses is rude and trollish.

And this is for everyone...It is not against the rules for someone to disagree with you.

Thanks for your attention, I'll be keeping an eye on things if needed.

I meant that ensuring quality replacement players is not as important to VAN as it is to a team like Washington where Nate Schmidt replaced Alzner.

You'd like them to have quality players everywhere in their lineup, but if they did they wouldnt be a bottom 5 team. They will go into next season with 7 "vet" D and they can use the 3-4 replacement opportunities/spot-duty on developing players/prospects IMO

The key is to approach every kid/prospect who is on an ELC, that rather expecting them to be on the team, that they need to DESERVE to be on the team. Juolevi shouldn't be a lock, but should get a good look, same with Boeser, Virtanen, Goldobin, etc etc. Reward players who deserve it, not because it will appeal to the uneducated Canucks fan who knows nothing about anything, or than what they listen to on 1040. If a kid deserves it, play them, if they don't, send them down.
- Codes1087

I agree 100%. icetime, responsibility and making the NHL lineup are things you earn by consistently showing up. Not because you had a good 4 game stretch or because you're high draftpick. Hutton deserves bottom pair or AHL. Bo deserves top line minutes. IMO Goldobin is the only player on the team that was developed in a good way, and he isn't even our prospect We got lucky with Bo that throwing him in the fire didn't (frank) his career.

Whether or not a prospect is ready for the NHL should be based SOLELY on the current state of their skillset... Even if they're obviously more talented than half the roster of a sh!tty team, it'd be doing them a disservice to promote them before their skillset has been optimized vs lesser competition. IMO Boeser & Goldobin are NHL ready... OJ isn't, but who knows, that may change by training camp.
- DrChristianTroy

This is exactly my point. Posters are saying these kids need to earn a spot...well, newsflash, they already have because our roster sucks. So how do you determine if a kids skillset is high enough based on some league wide based metric? Interesting discussion for sure. I think if a kid deserves a spot in the top 6 or top 9 they should play. No young, high pedigree prospects should be on the 4th line or the 7th Dman.

We are teetering on EDM Oilers of the past 10 years territory if we choose to player former 1st rounds picks too early. Look at what rushing kids/prospects into the league has done to them. I would sooner see us dress a poopty roster, let kids develop, and have a poopty NHL team for a few more years than to rush them and be mediocre for the next 10
- Codes1087

Rushing doesn't work, but there is a difference between what we are doing and what they did. EDM put kids on the ice and told them to be superstars from game 1, made them the leaders and played them 20+mins a night when they werent ready for that. We are limiting ice time, to let them slowly get used to the league. This is a good option for a kid like OJ(provided he gains muscle) for the start of the season. After 9-15 games if he doesn't belong send him down to London after having a taste of the big show. Worked wonders for Draisatl.
