It will as always come down to what will other teams offer? If we got in a bidding war I could maybe up that ante a little bit higher but not too much. He is a 2nd pairing d man. But this could be his (and his agent's) big opportunity to get paid dawg. |

Top 4 are playing very well right now, and there are three lefties in that mix.
I think Girardi being the only competent right shot on this team right now should mean something.
I am just not sure on Shatty anymore. Yes, he would help the power play, but not sure I wouldn't rather have what Smith brings for $2.0-$2.5 million less. - Pete V
Don't want Shatty for 7 years at $7M per

Florida gave Demers 5 years 22.5 million last summer, I think that's about right for Smith |

I like Shatty, but it's not as if he is an elite all-around defensemen.
I just feel like giving him that contract is just chasing the big right handed shot fromt he point on the PP. I go back and forth on this. Sometimes I don't think the Rangers don't have a better option and should roll the dice on Shatty, but right now with Girardi and Smith playing well, not sure I don't want those two guys more for next year at least, and the Rangers can explore a Girardi buyout either next year or the year after that, at a lower cap hit.
Again, I like Shatty, I would be fine with signing him, but he is not the type of player that I feel is a no-brainer signing.

I know there were a lot of fans who wanted to buyout Girardi last year. Glad they gave him another year after last years injury riddled season. |

I'd settle for smith. They can't let him go, brain farts or two I can deal with. This guys no holds barred I don't give a (frank) attitude was desperately needed here |

I agree about the numbers, but with him being a UFA & possible bidding competition (unless WE sign him prior to July 1, this is what I'm hoping)if he hits the market, how much higher would you go? 5 yrs, 25 Mill? That would be my absolute final & highest offer & that would be overpayment. |

That buyout still sucks. I think you have to try to get him to waive, and if he doesn't, he just have to make it through next year, where his full no trade goes away and maybe you have some more options.
Can he turn it around? I don't know, but man, he looks real bad right now.

Smith is kind of like what they draft McIlrath to be. Not a perfect analogy, but close enough.

I know I wanted to give him this year, just to see if it was all the injuries that caused his horrible play.
The fact they had no one ready to step in was probably a blessing for G. If they did, I think he would have been gone last year. |

Sam's gonna break his face trying to call this during the game. - nyrispmco
He almost swallowed his tongue getting ZIB-LAN-A-JAD out of his mouth w that excitement after the game winner.
And I hate to keep picking on Sam, but he made several more mistakes again last night. How about the hoopla over Skeij's 1st NHL playoff goal, only to say, "I;m sorry, it was not HIS 1ST PLAYOFF GOAL"? |

Honestly, and this is just me, but I don't care how bad he screws up a couple of names. It's Sam, and it's going to be a very sad day for me when he retires. There is nobody I like listening to more, perhaps because I grew up listening to him.
And I though the call on the OT winner was gold.
