I think Nylander could work on the nhl team next year in a sheltered role but its very tempting to leave him in the AHL another year and slide the ELC one more time.


Assuming the development goes well youd be getting a top 6 forward at rookie money for 3 years right around the time you expect to compete. Thats the kind of flexibility this team desperately needs.

Under the terms of Article 9.1(d) of the CBA, a player that signs their entry-level contract when they’re 18 can have up to two “slide years” in their deal if they don’t play 10+ games in the NHL in each of those first two seasons. For most players that’s not big deal, as they’re in major-junior for those two seasons – goalie prospect Nick Schneider is a good example of this as he has a deal, but since he’s in junior it’ll slide twice.

But European players are a bit of an oddity, and one that provides an interesting opportunity.

In last year’s draft, the Flames selected Oliver Kylington in the second round. He was under contract to a European club – Farjestads BK – and played for a European club – AIK – the season before he was drafted. Because he was a European drafted out of Europe he was able to come to North America and play in the American Hockey League despite being selected in the CHL’s Import Draft. The main factor here was his specific contractual status, as him being drafted while playing in Europe and being contracted to a European team was the primary reason he could come to the AHL straight away.

As a result, Kylington played a full pro season in the AHL as an 18-year-old without activating his entry-level deal (it slid a year), and most likely he’ll play a full AHL season in 2016-17 without his deal activating either. His NHL contract will probably start running in 2017-18, when he’s 20 and has already played two full seasons which didn’t contractually count.

Screw trading Nylander for Nash! It's way too early to give up on him, and if he turns into a stud, we'll be handing a 30 goal scorer to the NYR for old man Nash and his giant cap hit. I'll take Nash in our top 6 for next year, but a 2nd rounder is all I'm offering for him.

So then how is Ullmark a RFA this year?
How are ANY guys in the AHL ever RFAs?
Their contracts should all slide & slide & slide u till they play 10games in the NHL or whatever...

my man you gotta read the whole first sentence. Nylander signed at 18. Ullmark did not.

Most of these guys get to the AHL when they are 20 and older. thats why drafting euros is intriguing because you can bypass this, have their elc's slide like a junior player but have them play/develop in the AHL

Im not saying it wouldnt hurt them, its just not a situation dire enough that boston would walk away.

youd have to look at a scenario like Brandon Saad. Chicago had literally no shot at signing him or matching an offer sheet so CBJ got him for picks.

He meant, Nylander should stay in Rochester
And We should trade for Nash to play in that spot on Eichel's wing

I think something like Carrier + a 2nd might get it done
NyR need to move him for Cap & expansion reasons...

Well, he had 14 first and second round picks and took one defenseman, so that sounds about right.

If that's the case with Nylander to me it's a no brainer.

Part of the Leafs success this year was because those guys got used to playing in the AHL together.

Getting Rochester successful is priority one, if you can consistently do that well it bodes well for the big club.

No shortcuts this time.

np, i just think its about what their goal is next year. Maybe Nylander puts in a lot of work in the off season and fits in right away. if the goal is playoffs, ice the best team possible.

If its sort of a bridge/developmental year id let him work things out in rochester and get the following 3 years of top 6 production for basically nothing.
