The parade of dysfunction continues in Buffalo.
Structure, Character & Discipline...could you be anymore vague Terry? How about "Honor, Integrity and Hard Work?". What a bunch of corporate nonsense. It is becoming clear Pegula doesn't know what he's doing, didn't he sign Tim Murray to an extension in October? Is this what "hockey heaven"(another nonsense term) is supposed to look like?
Good luck to the next GM! I think it's Bull$!!! that they didn't give Murray another year. It's not like he didn't have a plan, and Pegula has to know that you don't just turn a historically bad team into "perennial playoff contender" in a year or two. If the Maple Leafs are your yardstick, you have to remember the Leafs bottomed out at 68+69 point seasons, the Sabres hit 52+54 points. We were really, really, really bad remember?
So yeah, I hate being a Sabres fan again, but it will be interesting...hope the new GM is ready to make a playoff push next year with the Sword of Damocles over his head!

It was rumored that Murray did not have any answers for the questions Pegula had. No matter what job you have, if your performance goes down, and your boss asks why, you say "I Don't know, have patients" you are most likely fired on the spot.
GMTM made a lot of mistakes in drafting (the second round in 2014, cornell and karaback, horrible) and trading (bogo, gorges fashing+dlo), as has been said many times on this board, he had almost unlimited resources when it came to picks and prospects and a last place finish in the division is what it got him.

I liked Murray's boldness, but how did he deserve another year?
He took a pile of assets and converted it into very little:
Overpaid for Kane
Overpaid for Lehner
Completely ripped off in the Fasching deal.
Lost on the Kuli/Pysyk deal
Turned: McNabb, Pysyk, Myers, Zadorov into very little return
Had 14 first and second round picks, trade half away, and the one's made, he picked only 1 defenseman.
Took Lemieux over Barbershev when the whole world knew better
Drafter Cornel and Karabacek when defensemen who were projected to be 1st round talent were still left on the board.
Hired (No, excuse me, paid a 3rd rounder for) Disco Dan who ruined Girgensons and stuck Samson on the wing for two straight years.
Could not sell Vesey on Buffalo after paying to talk to him.
Could not land Babcock after throwing the kitchen sink at him.
Signed Moulson to a ridiculous contract when it was pretty clear his best days were behind him.
How's this? Need more reasons? - sskkoo1
Since every one is horse sheit ... yes please.

Looking like an Edmonton vs Nashville finals, I'm not sure if they advance they can be beaten.
And here I am, a Buffalo fan with a depleted farm system, two #2 overall picks, one of which is an underwhelming wimp, 1 good defenseman and a complete mystery in goal, behind the bench and upstairs moving forward.
Terry Pegula has more or less had 8 coaches come and gone between both teams since he came here 5 years ago, a complete jamoke of a GM for the Bills ("(frank) our first round pick next year" - Doug Whaley after trading two 1sts to move up to draft Watkins and seeing him for the first time in mini-camp a month later, meanwhile literal every WR picked after him has been better) a 4th round graded QB picked in the 1st round and consistently puzzling draft and FA selections. A sketchy "President of the Owner" with his weasel hands in both teams pockets, two President of hockey operations come and gone, and no playoffs even close to being sniffed during the time span. Not to mention the dozens, pushing in the hundreds, of other people fired from either organization also during that time span.
And that's not even all of it. Both organizations are a complete mess.
For the Bills, it's funny, I think a lot of the blame there falls on the GM.
For the Sabres, as much as Tim Murray gutted our roster, he literally was tearing it down and starting from scratch and regardless of his mistakes, should have been able to see it through at least until next off-season.
Either way, all signs point to ownership being clueless and trigger-happy with the pink slips. If I'm anyone at this point, I stay the (frank) away from Buffalo if I want any job security or elbow room with owners who are way too hands on with everything, despite what they may say to the contrary.
Buffalo was supposed to become a premier destination for both franchises. We still have guys almost in tears when we draft them, have gotten burned by coaches and the league alike over the past couple of years and are showing no signs of stability or structure or discipline as proper organizations or as an admittedly frustrated fan community.
Embarrassing. |

There's a big list of things Murray screwed up on...
so what exactly did Murray do to deserve another offseason?

Sign an extension, first off. But he had half a year that to me, doesn't count when he first got here.
The next season was obviously to try and get McEichel. It was a tear-down and tank season. And he absolutely tore the roster down, NHL GM mode style.
Last season we did about as good as anyone could have expected. I think almost everyone was happy with the improvement and looking forward to this season.
Last off-season was where it started to look iffy to some of us on here. I, as well as several others, got absolutely lambasted for predicting them to regress this season. We signed Okposo, yet that was it. Very stupidly, Murray traded yet another 3rd round pick to wine and dine a guy who basically said everything he could to tell us it wasn't gonna happen even before we traded for his rights. No depth signings, no depth trades, just the head-scratcher Kulikov trade.
This season we had several injuries to start the year but the same damn excuses and end product. IMO, if there is a best time for injuries, it's the start of the year.
So Kulikov then Eichel goes down, then Kane. O'Reilly was in and out and playing injured. That's when the rest of the team is supposed to pick up the slack and earn their keep. We fully should have expected Reinhart to step up his game, Ennis to re-appear, Girgensons to gain some of his form from a few years ago, Foligno to become a 15g power-forward, Larsson to make a step forward and Gionta, Gorges, Okposo and Moulson to provide leadership while our weak defense only had to try and stay healthy and limit shots against.
Instead, the only guy who even showed up was Moulson and regardless of if it was on the PP or not, he was on pace for 25+ goals to start the season. Ristolainen was his solid self, Franson was playing decent, McCabe was playing well and progressing nicely, even Gorges wasn't looking too bad. Both Lehner and Nilsson played lights out. Even Falk and Fedun played good enough.
The biggest issue, however, was playing Grant, Deslauriers, Carrier and Gionta way too much, and in the case of Grant, even at all. While this would have been a perfect opportunity to call up Bailey, Baptiste, Rodriguez and Daniel Muzito-Bagenda, Tim Murray began making his first mistakes actually running the team and choosing the personnel. My only guess is he wanted Rochester to keep the same roster more or less in tact to try and develop a decent team chemistry and have a consistent farm going forward but with the major injuries, it was also the perfect time to bring the guys I mentioned up and let them have 20 or so games of experience. Worst case, they don't play well but it absolutely would have been better than D-Lo, Grant and Carrier.
When we were healthy, we had maybe a one month stretch around January where we looked like we were pulling it together and then we just curled up in the corner and died as loose lips started leaking locker-room discontent. But we could see it as plain as day, something was NOT working and all signs pointed to the coach and the system once we had a healthy roster.
This was the only season under Murray that didn't go according to plan, in all honesty and the excuses that everyone made for why we sucked (injuries) all of a sudden, Tim Murray was on the hook for and couldn't use as excuses even though the fan base relentlessly blamed the injuries for the team's performance this season. The whole time on top of that, Terry Pegula was breathing down Murray's neck every step of the way and despite him saying he had no part of hiring Murray or Bylsma, we all know that's a load of poop.
They should have mutually agreed to move on from the coach, give it one more year and then go from there. Tim Murray had 3 full seasons to dismantle and assemble the roster from the farm up. That's not nearly enough time to do a complete roster overhaul nor enough time to expect 2 consecutive last place finishes to result in a playoff team.
Murray had a lot of lapses in judgement this season, yet didn't pull a single punch since he arrived here, was honest and candid and a breath of fresh air for a community used to it's sports teams' management beating around the bush and making excuses. He's still young, was given full control and told Terry Pegula his plan was to dismantle the roster and build his own team from scratch trough the draft and trades. Bad luck shouldn't account for his performance and lottery losses and injuries are bad luck.
Firing Tim Murray just set us back another 2 years, in all honesty and it's not going to be fun moving forward. |

You presented a couple excuses,
But u haven't actually listed things that Murray has accomplished
He's done a few good things...
but the list of negatives outweigh it
Would I have been ok if he came back?
Sure, I guess
But his firing was deserved
And how is this setting us back 2 years?

No excuses. Reasons. He made mistakes and made some strides. I'm not going to list them.
The writing is on the wall. We'll see what happens.
The kool-aid must be good, I guess. |
