Not sure if Gagner was ruined. He has 400 some points in 700 nhl games. Not the greatests stats out of a 6th OA pick. Not too bad though. He just didn't live up to expectations. Again though maybe a better more seasoned coach could have got more out of him. Torts seemed too.

Guy put up a .61 point per game pace during his time in Edmonton.

That averages to 50 points per 82 games.

Nothing wrong with that.

Rushed to the NHL when he shouldn't have been

But Edmonton still isn't as bad vancouver at developing prospects.

we're the worst

- classic321

I wouldn't necessarily agree with this, in past years the Canucks developed the 2011 core. Gillis didn't pick anyone talented enough to develop, big difference. Horvat spent another year in junior and then was developed by the Benning regime, but he's one player. And he gets a lot of the credit for his growth as a player.

So who exactly is the proven coach we should have hired?

I'm not thrilled with the hiring of Green as HC, but what were the realistic options? I would have preferred to bring him in as an assistant, but from the interview with TL today on 1040, it sounds like the assumption was always that Green was groomed for the last few years and WD's time was limited anyway.

All the hockey analysts I've listened to over the last few days that know Green say this is a good decision and the right time.

He'll get his two years to prove himself, and if it isn't moving in the right direction by the end of the 2018/19 season, then perhaps the proven coach will be available.

Generally coaches that are better need to be fired first. Babcock had 12 years of coaching, Quenville fired a couple of times. AV was fired about 6 times. Julien and Boudreau have all been fired lots. A second go round coach or an Asst nhl coach.

Guy Boucher even had coached for 3 different Q teams for 8 years before taking an AHL job.

Green was an asst for 4 years, a HC for 1, then HC for 4 in AHL. That's a lot less most coaches.

Nope, I didn't say that was. For a 6th OA pick it's not the worst. To see him struggle to find a contract every year and get his minutes.

Bounced around because he didnt learn an all-around game until CBJ was smart enough to deploy him as 4th line C and powerplay/shootout specialist. I think you could make a case that his time in Edmonton didnt help, when clearly he has the talent to produce

He isn't most coaches. He is clearly considered a top coaching prospect around the league given how many organizations have shown interest in him.

Babcock, McLellan and Torts up for Jack Adams award

My vote would be for 1) Torts 2) Babs 3) McLellan

Ray Ferraro was a teammate of Green's on the Isles. He said basically Green experienced all aspects of being a player. He was a lazy skilled player. He turned into a hardworking grit player. He knows how to relate and reach players. In coaching he's innovative. He's demanding but in the right way to not lose a guy. You need to earn ice time. He knows how to coach up a player and not stifle them or cast them aside. Like he will give a player chances to learn from mistakes. If he doesn't get it after all the teaching then he'll move on. Will coach a game that pushes the pace and has an offensive element.

If any of Ray's take is true or works out then Green is good for development of this team. I don't know if Nucks had any realistic alternatives. I have reservations with the inexperience. That he may be no different then WD and will overplay hardworkers over talent and give vets too much respect.

But Green was groomed to break into the NHL. Guess no better time then the present. Expectations are low anyway. So he can't do any worse. If he does better and works out. Then Management is applauded. Green grows with the team to the next level. If he sputters and fails to progress the team there is no real damage. After a few more drafts of talent Nucks bring in an established guy to take new core of talent to playoff contention. Win win either way to go with Green now.

say it isnt so! I doubt we will ever again see a coach on an nhl team as dumb as willie.
As well, we never know green could turn out to be the best coach in the nhl. We wont know till somewhere through next season at the earliest.

Don't take one part of the sentence out of context to mean a clone. Just a remark on a tendency WD had and hope isn't repeated in TG. Never seen a NHL coach like WD. Don't think we will ever again.

TG comes off as balanced and intelligent. He believes good communication is an essential part of coaching to get through to players. So there's that going for him now. Let's see what else he does.

We all have question marks with him. That goes with the territory of a rookie NHL coach. His burden now is to show us what he can do. Just like all the new players Nucks are going to be bringing in. At least they have that in common to bond over and develop into respectability.

Linden said multiple teams requested a meeting with Green THIS year and he declined. So no, those teams didn't/ haven't gone out and hired more experienced coaches.
