Tanev is far more valuable than a mid rd 1st in a weaker "" draft. If Tanev is moved it should be for a F that is in the league now. Or a prospect Dman and mid 1st.
let's not be giving valuable assets away. - storm88
Tanev is such a tough one to judge - those who watch him know how good he is, but without putting up the points it's rare for those outside the market to place as much value in him. That's why any proposed trade involving him causes so much friction on both sides. |

Hard to blame a team tanking to get a McDavid. - doon
McDavid is the only player to come along since Crosby to have the proper label of "generational". He was well worth the effort, whether it worked out or not. |

Maybe it's better the retire as Canucks. They are basically 2 Ryan Smyths to that franchise. - doon
I prefer 2 ray bourques. Go get your cup and retire and hopefully we get some sort of asset for them, if not I dont care. |

No you're not showing logic, you're just complaining because you didn't get what you wanted and now you're picking random drafts to prop up your argument.
That historical facts are there, the better players come from higher in the draft, it's not even debatable. Do some great players come from later in the first round or in other rounds, absolutely. - LeftCoaster
Yes good players do come from later in the draft but as you some said 5 is better then 8. It's not proven 5OA is better then 8OA. It has been proven over the past 5 or so years that 1-2 have been within the top 5 in their drafts. |

Of course. But of course as soon as that happens the league will do everything they can to prevent it from happening again. |

You are being fair with your comments. We see him all the time and I think Vancouver fan base over values him and outside they undervalue him.
He is a solid stay at home guy that does not hit fight or put up points. He blocks shots and is a very a sound positional player. |

GMs make trades not fans though. If Benning put him on the market the bidding war would be great. 4 mill with 3 years left while he is in his prime.
He was just Canadas best dman at he worlds last season.
If you have a top pairing left dman who can put up points he is just what you want to anchor that pairing. |

Absolutely. I love having Matthews, but anybody trying to make an argument that he is better than McDavid is nuttier than squirrel poop. |

Those type of defensemen just aren't traded normally. |

Perhaps hard for opposing fanbase's to judge but I think most hockey minds see his worth.
Simply put, the guy is an elite, defensive-minded transition defenseman on an absolutely amazing contract.
Benning himself admitted that he received a plethora of calls regarding Tanev last off-season. |

He sure showed he's not far off though. Much better defensive game then McDavid. |

Matthews is a great young player, but he's not a generational talent. An often overused reference imo. |

I would really not want to see him as a Canuck for the next three years. Move him before the NTC kicks in |

They have gone on record saying they aren't going anywhere. They made it very clear they will end their careers as Vancouver Canucks. |

I saw him play with Rielly at the worlds and was very impressed. Would love to add a guy like him, as we could use one of two more folks like that on our back end. |

Respectfully disagree. You seem to be under the impression that Tanev will net us a Taylor Hall type forward like Larson did…not going to happen. If you look at it realistically he could net us a mid to late first and that's it. With Tanev's looming injury concerns his value has massively dropped over the past season. |
