Exactly. And teams like Chicago/LA have shared five cups by taking their elite players and surrounding them with other quality players - that's how you get cups, not necessarily by having that one superstar. - lumlums
You need a couple really good centers and Dmen to build around.
We unfortunately are lacking in those areas |

No thanks.
We are rebuilding. You do that for the draft, you would get way more in picks and unproven prospects.
I want a toronto rebuild. Not a buffalo rebuild.
You add players like that in 3-4 years time if you have any holes that you need to fill. Use areas that we have stocked up to make trades to fill holes. We have no idea what we will need in 3-4 years when we are ready to make the playoffs again.
Neither of those players are doing anything for this team except helping use stay out of the basement which is where we need to be. - mauryballstein
Buffalo and Toronto basically did the same thing ...one won the lotto and the other lost ...

I'm sure she's beautiful, I was speaking in general terms though. - LeftCoaster
I wouldn't go as far as beautiful haha. jk. She's a good looking woman, smart, and for a girl that was a 17 year old mom. She isn't like the ones you see on Teen mom. Took care of her daughter instead of partying. |

It's not even close, come on, Matthews is more of the Stamkos ilk, a great shooter/goal scorer. That's not to take anything away from Matthews or Stamkos, awesome players, but they're not in the same league of McDavid or Crosby. - LeftCoaster
I was just thinking the same thing |

Tanev straight up for Cal foote basically then? In this draft i'd ask for another pick later on. |

I'd consider that, expecially if they can sign Shattenkirk (who is much better defensively than most give him credit for). My preference though would be to pressure Anaheim into giving up Manson due to their expansion draft situation |

Not really - Sure, TO got rid of Kessel and Dion as they wanted to change the culture and core, but they also ended up with more points in their "tank" season than they did the year before... Buffalo just out-right moved anybody who was performing well |

I get that but toronto stayed the course adding as many picks as they can. Buffalo started dealing picks and signing UFAs to early. Buffalo has also totally ignored their defense and it is easily worst 3 in the NHL.
Eichel and Mathews are essentially equal. Its all the other moves im referring to. |

It depends - one mock draft on NHL.com had Liljegren going 24th overall, and if there's even a stray pube of a chance that he's there at 17/18, then there's no way I'd want to move the pick. |

Yeah, and even Ristolainen is very suspect in the defensive zone. He may be one of the better young PP QB D-men out there, but he's utterly lost when trying to defend his own net. |

Difference of Toronto's rebuild to Edmonton, Buffalo is that they had Kadri, Bozak, JVR, Gardiner, Rielly, komarov. They let Marner and Nylander season a bit before throwing them to the wolves. Hyman is 24, Brown 22.
Edmonton and Buffalo sold off everything. Left the kids with nothing. |

Other than Risto I dont think they even had another Dman who would have made the Canucks top 6 when healthy. They are legit that bad. They are going to have to rebuild the team again just fix the defense |

They both have traded a bunch of their old core for assets
They both traded first rounders for goalies
They both need help on D
One won the lotto ...the other didn't
If Mathews missed 20 games and eichel plays 82 games you might be looking at the two teams the opposite |

Buffalo added guys to fill those rolls through trade and free agency
There's really just a lot of luck and injuries that separate the two rebuilds |

I will say that Franson is a weird one - his fancystats always look excellent, but he always seems to be just a little bit slow out there. I'd take him as a 5/6 guy who plays PP, but wouldn't want him in the top 4... - lumlums
He has had 2 down seasons even by his standards. He would be a good 3rd pairing, PP guy for Van. Just as long as he is not playing anything more then 3rd pairing.
Sbisa/ Franson haha |

I think toronto drafted better, signed more college free agents, filled holes(anderson) and let their players dictate when they are ready.
Buffalo traded picks for Lehner, signed players to make them better now when the players they had (other than eichel) werent ready to take that next step. They also completely ignored the defense which is going to be next to impossible to fix now, even last year taking nylander over sergachev.
This is why I really hope benning takes his time to acquire as many assets as possible over the summer and next 2 drafts before he starts looking to add vet UFAs.. We at least have some nice young players in various positions.. We still need legit top pairing Dmen and a top center. All of which can be added over the next 3 drafts. |
