Great article as usual Pach. Regarding the draft - and the Sabres lousy luck - it is what it is. If we think our team's salvation can only be found in ping pong balls falling in a certain order, then we deserve our own fate. Good organizations have a way to draft, develop and nurture good players no matter where they draft. At #8, we should get a really solid player. Hopefully the new GM sees our #1 weakness (defense) and drafts accordingly.
Regarding the Pegula's ownership of the team(s), I am perplexed on their ownership style. They should have cleaned house with both organizations when they took ownership and put respective football and hockey czars in place - and then get out of the way. Let the sports pros runs the respective organizations and give them all the support they need to make the right, long-term decisions. I find it particularly weird that the Bills football coach reports directly to the owner and is the apparent GM as well. McDerrmot was an assistant head coach only a few months ago and now he is running the whole Bills organization? Bizarre. It's not like Hopefully with the Whaley firing the Pegula's fire a smart football mind and let him run the show. Pegula should hire a VP football Ops and a GM. The football VP should report to Pegula and the GM to the VP football Ops. The coach should report to the GM. The exact same structure should be set up for the Sabres.

In a perfect world, Whaley should have been fired at the end of the season
But...........
You have to wait til after the draft to clean house if you don't make that move in Jan. You can' have Whaley out there telling other teams what the bills learned from scouting
oh and F@ck the Sens |

All that matters now is that he makes the correct hires for both teams.

having seen a couple of ownership changes, usually when a new owner comes in, he sticks with what he has in place before bringing in his own people...
as for McDermott, he's a helluva interviewer and he sure knows how to play the part of being in charge...
and as for pros running the ops dept...absolutely
as always, thx for reeding |

I couldn't care less how many gm's and coaches they go through while trying to get it right now...what bugs me is the lack of an ops department leader for both teams |

Why would it change? It's not like anybody saw what happened last night coming, so I'm of mind that it was legit and the balls happened to fall that way.
But, I'm all for changing the lottery. I would love to see it where all non-playoff teams get 1 ball and the order is picked by selecting balls one at a time. This way there would be zero incentive not to shoot for the playoffs each year. You either make the playoffs or you have no clue and no control where you end up picking 1-15. |

in many helps it is not a bad thing
forces the sabres to draft a d man or trade for a d man
if they picked 4 or 5 they would draft the next Michael Dal Colle |
