Looks like Will Butcher will not be signing in Colorado. Maybe we should offer a 3rd for his rights. |

Exactly this. People are idiots. It baffles me that somehow all of the following are simultaneously true:
1. Pegulas are meddling and micromanaging in both teams.
2. Russ Brandon is hiring everyone and has huge influence in both organizations.
3. Pegulas don't really care about the teams as long as they make money.
4. Performance of the teams has no bearing on hirings/firings.
5. Most fans/media were clamoring for firings because of performance. |

1. Yes
2. Yes
3. No one says that, we acknowledge he wants to win and doesn't care about the money. This doesn't equate to being a good owner.
4. Again, who says that?
5. Some fans were "clamoring" for firings, mostly for Bylsma, but not most, and as far as the Bills, almost none.
How is Pegula a meddling owner? He hired Rex Ryan, that was his pick, not Doug Whaley's, at least that was how it was widely reported. Pegula thought he was better qualified to choose a football coach than professional football management
The departure of Pat LaFontaine was rumored because he didn't support an all out tank and his subordinates were going behind his back to get in Pegula's ear. Pegula sided with the tank, and the rest is history.
Two pretty big examples of a meddling owner with very little sports knowledge and experience making the decisions that he hires professionals to make.
Those are stories that have been widely reported. Based on that evidence I think it is reasonable to assume that the Pegulas like to be involved in the decision making and day to day operations of their franchises, which is their right, after all they own the teams. However, it might not be in the best interests of the success of their teams. History has shown it has not worked well and created some problems setting the franchises back.
I don't think anyone doubts that the Pegulas have the best intentions at heart. What does concern people, is that they don't have the knowledge and experience to usurp the decision making of the professionals that have spent their entire careers learning and gaining experience in their respective sports. |

In all honesty, it's as simple as Pegula wanting his own hires and not the hires of Lafontaine/Nix/Wilson etc.

Botterill is literally the only publicized candidate that I don't want. His concussion history means a chance for CTE. He is younger so the signs and symptoms may just be emerging and the condition, if he does have it, could get worse in the coming years. Not saying he has it, but there is a chance he does, which imo makes it a risky hire. If he were 50 instead of 40 I would feel a lot better about it. |

Chronic traumatic encephalopathy (CTE) is a progressive degenerative disease found in people who have had repeated blows to the head. A subtype of this is dementia pugilistica (DP), i.e. "punch-drunk," as it was initially found in those with a history of boxing. CTE has been most commonly found in professional athletes participating in American football, rugby, ice hockey, boxing, professional wrestling, stunt performing, bull riding, rodeo, Association football and other contact sports who have experienced repeated concussions or other brain trauma. Its presence in domestic violence is also being investigated. It can affect high school athletes, especially American football players, following just a few years of activity.[1] It is a form of tauopathy.
Signs and symptoms Edit
Symptoms of CTE generally begin 8–10 years after experiencing repetitive mild traumatic brain injury.[2] First stage symptoms include deterioration in attention as well as disorientation, dizziness, and headaches. Further disabilities appear with progressive deterioration, including memory loss, social instability, erratic behavior, and poor judgment. Third and fourth stages include progressive dementia, slowing of muscular movements, hypomimia, impeded speech, tremors, vertigo, deafness, and suicidality. Additional symptoms include dysarthria, dysphagia, and ocular abnormalities - such as ptosis.[3]
Currently, CTE can only be definitively diagnosed by direct tissue examination, including full autopsies and immunohistochemical brain analyses.[4]
The neuropathological appearance of CTE is distinguished from other tauopathies, such as Alzheimer's disease. The four clinical stages of observable CTE disability have been correlated with tau pathology in brain tissue, ranging in severity from focal perivascular epicentres of neurofibrillary tangles in the frontal neocortex to severe tauopathy affecting widespread brain regions.[5]

Wouldn't you do the same in his shoes?
If the Sabres were good, and he fired Murray under the guise of wanting his own people, I'd be dumbfounded. But he's doing it based on performance. Same with Whaley.
Sean McDermott has obviously made an impact on TP, and what he wants in his coaches/management, and I can't blame him. The guy is going to be a good coach IMO, and is incredibly smart.
I'll be honest, as someone who has witnessed years of Bills turmoil, I think they got it right with McDermott. Time will tell though |

If you were more knowledgeable on the topic, you would realize that medical autopsies show it is much more common than we ever thought. Read up on it. They can not diagnose it until people have died by examining their brain tissue. But recently they have found it is way more common than previously thought.
A 40 year old with a history of concussion problems is a risky hire for a decision making job. That's all I am saying. |

It gets worse with time. You really need to read up on it. He could have mild symptoms now, but it could get much worse. Which is why I said if he were ten years older I wouldn't worry about it. |
