Matthews would be the top one if you are taking away McDavid. Laine would be a consideration but with the head injury and being a winger you gotta think long and hard about that. Doughty or Burns if you had the ability to win now without Eichel (buffalo does not)..

At this point Matthews and maybe Karlsson. Ovi, Malkin, Crosby will be crossing 30 soon and although they'll be good for a long time still, they will start slowing down. If we had to lose Eichel this early I want someone who we will be getting his prime.

I wouldn't make the trade for Karlsson, simply for the reason that he's almost 7 or 8 years older. The difference in impact the two have on their teams (which is obviously very high) is minimal compared to their age.

If mcdavid was off the table I wouldn't trade eichel 1 for 1 for anyone.

Matthews would be the only consideration in my mind, maybe laine too. I think eichel is better than both of them, add that to what was endured to secure him and it just isn't interesting to me.
