We have plenty of good defensive prospects, some of them would even be considered blue-chip prospects.
We had/have one of the deeper prospect pools in the NHL. Our team has shown that they are capable of being a legitimate playoff team and we don't think we are far off from being a contender. I think we can afford to spend a little in order to fill one of our biggest weaknesses (we need a top 6 RW and a top 4 dman).
I'm not sure what the actual cost of Tanev would be. But I'd have to think that some combination of these guys would get it done:
Fat Rass
Kylington
Hickey
Kulak
Wotherspoon
Fox
Klimchuk
Poirier
Janko (I hope not, but you know--Weisbrod).
Mangiapane
Phillips
2nd-7th round draft picks. - Saskabush
As good as the Flames played the final two months you are still a fringe team. You need 3rd and 4th line scoring in the worst way...another top 4 D to compliment Brodie Gio and Hamilton and Calgary outright refuses to spend on a true no 1 goalie. Until those things happen you will be circling the wild card drain for a few more years.

Carol, dont mess with the hockey gods......just because it makes means the Canucks will not do it.
Its great fodder for discussion, but, as history has shown, the Canucks rarely do things that make sense and we all end up disappointed.... |

Re: Tanev.
Top 4, RHD are the hottest commodity on the trade market right now.
A rebuilding team must explore their options when they have a guy of Tanev's pedigree.
Yzerman has already leaked the fact that Drouin is on the market.
Benning needs to do the same with Tanev, if that deal is ever going to happen.
Teams are lining up offers for Drouin. We need to get teams making bids for Tanev ASAP, so both TB and Van are at the top of the heap for trade targets.
If the Drouin bidding war gathers more steam than the Tanev bidding war, then we'll get left in the dust.
Drouin for Tanev seems like too good of a match, so it probably won't happen. But, after Shattenkirk signs somewhere and Anaheim trades one of their big 3 D, Tanev will be the best defenseman available and should score a nice return. I love Tanev, but his trade value will never be higher. There will be ~12 teams looking for a top 4 guy on a reasonable deal.
If Benning doesn't take advantage of the Tanev situation, he will undo all the good will he earned with the solid returns for Burrows and Hansen. |

Tanev would literally be the best DEFENCEman on you're team, no thanks.
I was high on Kapanen during his draft year but meh, a handful of playoff goals does not make him valuable. - Whiskey-Tango
Best dman on the team. LOL. He'd be second pairing. He's your best dman, but you're among the worst teams in the league.
A one dimensional decent, not great dman? Kapanen and a first, but I wouldn't go higher than that. |

Missing the playoffs 2 out of the last 4 years, not to mention barely making it this year, getting severely spanked by the Ducks twice... Legitimate playoff team eh? |

Kylington is a high risk-high reward type of prospect. The guy can flat out fly and he has the offensive skill to be a threat whenever he's on the ice. If he can round out the rest of his game he could very well be a top pairing dman for years to come.
Fat Rass is more defensively sound and could be one of our best defensive prospects. I'd like to see him get a shot with Brodie next year if we don't grab anyone via trade.
Adam Fox just had one of the best seasons a true freshman dman has had in the history of the NCAA. He is the definition of a blue chip prospect.
Kylington and Rass have a good chance of making our team out of camp (as of right now). I think all 3 of these dmen have a higher ceiling than Tanev so it would be tough to include any of them in a package for him.
If you don't think that some combination of the players/picks that I just listed couldn't land Tanev then it might be you who is over valuing their players.
Whether or not we like the price is another question altogether. - Saskabush
Agreed to disagree. Kylington is terrible and Fox is a smurf. You are dilusional if you think one of your C prospects gets a cheap, young top 4 dman troll elsewhere please |

It isnt like Tanev is OEL level and age. Get the frenzy going and pull the trigger on the best offer, he will begin to decline before the team is on the rise. |

Rather trade him to Buffalo. They have a better group of players and Tanev will help solidify the Sabres roster. I want nothing to do with us sending a player in his prIme to Leaves. |

Our bottom 6 is fine. We just need to ditch a few plugs to make some room for guys in the AHL.
Ferland- Bennett-Versteeg is as good of a 3rd line as any other top team.
Lazar, Janko, Brouwer, Stajan, Hathaway and Chiasson (he was good on the 4th line) are battling for the 4 th line.
We do need a top 4 dman (That's what Tanev's for ) We could also use a top 6 RW.
I don't think we are refusing to spend, it just didn't make sense last year. We were tight to the cap and would've had to give up significant assets to acquire MAF or Bishop (and it's not like their seasons were any better than Elliott's anyway).
We have a lot of garbage coming off the books this year that we can afford to put towards a goalie, I'd be surprised if that doesn't happen with the expansion draft coming up.
Gio Hamilton
Brodie Tanev
Rass/Kylington Stone
I think that would be considered a pretty solid blueline by anyones standards. We add a top 6 RW and sign Bishop then all the weaknesses you pointed out suddenly disappear.

Well, a) clearly the Sabres don't have a better team. and b) if you're askign more than that, I prefer you send him to the Sabres too, because that helps the Leafs out by giving them more easy points, long term, by hindering one team in their division. |

For Kapanen - CanuckDon
Well, I'd hate to give you guys Kapanen, he'd be your best forward in a year or two, but the Leafs need a decent stay at home guy, so I'd do it. |

What, Horvat?
Jeez, I'm sure if we gave Kapanen first line duties, with prime PP time, 50 points next year wouldn't be hard for him at all.
I can't really see anyone else you'd be referring to. Are the sisters retired yet? - prock
