That makes it even worse of an idea, IMO.
There are numerous other players I would target with the 8th, Nylander, and Reinhart then somebody making $9.5M for the next 4 years. - kingcong39
558 career goals but we don't need that, how many 8th overall picks do we need ? how many more times are we going to pick in the top 10 ? we have seen what Reinhart can do and how do we know Nylander is going to become anything at all. If you going to spend why not spend on one of the best players in the game. Why keep spending money on crap players when you can make it count.......... for once.
But then again, I'm blinded by all our playoff appearances and cup banners. |

I'm in too. I'd offer them pick 8, busthart, and one of Foligno or Girgensons (or both?) - Khmylev
poop, we just became fwends too.
8th overall, Skunk, Foligno and Girgensons, we get to keep Nylander, have Bailey and Baptiste to replace Foligno/Girgs, Rodriguez is a perfect bottom-6 center (imo) and from the looks of it, Okposo should recover (the rumor is that he had a reaction to antibiotics).
Let's be real here, Moulson isn't going anywhere, Ennis most likely neither. Best case scenario, Vegas takes Bogosian in the expansion draft. Washington gets two roster-ready depth guys and an under performing 2nd overall who could still turn into a 70+ point player.
We'd have
Ovechkin/Eichel/Okposo
Nylander/ROR/Bailey
Baptiste/Ennis/Moulson
Carrier/Rodrigues/Larsson
Ristolainen/Antipin(?)
Guhle/McCabe
Gorges/Falk/Nelson
And a Free Agent on defense and some depth signings for the bottom 6.
Everyone thinking that trading for a Fowler type gets us pushing for the playoffs next year needs to take a step back. We still need to score and we have a new GM and a new coach yet again coming in. Our best shot next year is to try and outscore opponents.
I have faith in Lehner going forward, apparently, people are high on Ullmark and it doesn't look like Peterson will pan out so just forget about it for now.
Add in training camp surprises, we should take a cautious and optimistic appraoch going into the 2017-2018 season. Playoffs are unrealistic with the current roster and are still a long shot even with a trade for a young defenseman.
And unless it's Oliver Ekman-Larsson, I don't see them being cost-effective pickups.
Edit: Completely forgot about Evander Kane being on the team for a minute, lol. |

I don't know bout the trade itself but this was ovi's worst goal total in a full season in quite some time. May be it's a one off, maybe it's the fact that he's gunna be 32 soon. Either way may wanna go all out for a D-man instead of a winger - Sabresfan-365
He's still going to be a 30-goal scorer for the foreseeable future. He's only signed for 4 more years going forward and Washington can retain $2 million easy.
Name ONE 30-goal scorer on this team. Oh wait. We haven't had one in years now.
Name one scoring winger to play with Eichel right now. Nope.
Name one top-2 defenseman? We have one of those. Name one 2nd pairing defenseman? McCabe, again, we have one of those.
A goaltender with a top-10 sv%? Yup, we have one of those two.
I think this fan base is over-stressing a trade for a top-4 defenseman. We can get an adequate guy in F/A and coaching will go a long way toward an improved d-corp. Hopefully we hit a home run on the coach this time around. |

And as an added bonus, that first line would have to be the "jungle love" line, for obvious reasons. Morris day and the time approve of your GMing. |

I really like Ovechkin, but I'd rather go cost control and lesser age.
Find me a young forward who is not at 9.5MM per year.

Trading one roster player, a draft pick and a prospect for a roster player is gutting a team? Oh-kay. - BeadyEyedDouche
Which is funny because apparently it was a great idea when the last GM was here.
I'm not a fan of trading picks prospects constantly, but even at 31, Ovechkin is the elite of the elite, and will be better at 35 years old, than Sam or Nylander will be at 25
That being said, Nylander+Sam+8 is a lot to move for something that doesn't upgrade the defense |

Gorges coming off the books when Eichel's next contract kicks in, potential buyout candidates in Moulson/Ennis/Bogosian are also potential pickups by Vegas or trade pieces, and no premier Free Agent Forwards this summer.
And the whole scenario is contingent upon Washington needing to kick their locker-room in the ass. If Ovechkin goes, it sends a message to them but they have Backstrom going forward, great depth, and a top-5 goaltender. We send them a top-6 guy and some more depth in return as well as a top-10 pick. They need to figure it out quick, because their window is closing and the best way to extend it, is to trade Ovie, IMO. As crazy as it sounds. But at the same time, his age and cap hit would mean no one's paying a King's ransom.
It's a perfect example of why you don't build your team around a winger. Backstrom would be their face moving forward. We have our Franchise center and by all means, we have a 1A and a 1B going forward with Eichel/ROR. |

This fan base blows my mind. He would instantly be the best player we've had on the team since Briere left, is an elite player still as you've said, they've been begging for an actual blockbuster trade for years and he's going to pot 30+ a year still.
I'm of the belief our D isn't as bad off as everyone thinks and Shattinkirk aside, we can pick up a solid guy in FA this summer, still make a secondary-level trade for a Faulk-type of player and should focus more on icing an exciting team that can score goals as opposed to a defensive team that can't get out of it's own way.
89 suggested Nylander in addition to Reinhart and the 8th. I wouldn't go that far... but would still highly consider it if Washington retained a little celery. It's a pretty tempting trade for them if they lose to Pittsburgh tomorrow.
I'd put it on the level of the Subban/Weber trade from last summer. Out of (frank)ing nowhere... and regardless of opinion, pretty close to fair value for both teams. |

This is my issue. I know we have risto and mccabe but this is still undoubtedly our biggest problem and is one of the main reasons we have trouble scoring 5v5.
Look the pens under botterill figured this part out. When you have someone that good at forward you just need the wingers to not have their heads up their ass, skate well and not have complete brick hands.
If any other team trades perron for hagelin its a nothing move. but you put that kind of winger next to crosby or malkin and it works because when the centre is that good, the winger just has to be able to keep up (feet and hands).
Foligno is an utter mess here because he simply cant with either but that doesnt mean that we need to make a big play for a winger, cost effective move makes way more sense here.
Eichel has proven he can carry his wingers, ristolainen has proven he cant carry his partner.
Its a no brainer to me. i love ovi, and you and BED are probably right about what he can bring but this kind of move has to be for a defencemen. |
