Not that you could guarantee management and the fans stick to a plan like this, but the opportunity of acquiring Drouin, signing him to a reasonable cap hit could be higher than the cost of acquiring him:
Tampa lacks bargaining power right now, they have zero cap space on a win-now team with too many core players to resign. Fresh of his first 50 point season, if signed to a moderate cap hit, say $5m/year, and have him accumulate several more 50+ point seasons could yield a much larger return than Tanev.
I know its highly unlikely anyone would think of the deal that way (due to careers being hinged on every move), but if you treat Drouin strictly as an investment, his value is rising and you could essentially flip him at or near his highest point as he reaches 25-27 years old. Fun to think of, but doubt it would play out that way... - WhiteLie
I just envision the asking price to be Tanev plus one or 2 of Dahlen/Virt/Goblin/2nd...some kind of package like that. I'd rather just trade Tanev for picks.

I want no part of drouin. We have nothing on defense or center moving forward those holes need to be filled.
Teams who are looking to fill a need should be trying to acquire Drouin.. NYI, Canes etc.. Or any other team trying to make the playoffs, not teams who are garbage and have not even bottomed out yet. A drouin deal makes sense in 3-4 years times. - mauryballstein
Again, I disagree. Drouin doesn't make us a winning team, or a bubble team. No single player would outside of crosby or mcdavid. What it does is give us another core piece, not just guys we hope will be that. In what way have we not bottomed out what a bizarre thing to say after finishing 3rd and the 2nd last in the league the last two years. |

easy on the Dahin hype...people were saying similar things about Chyrchrun and Liljegren at one point to. Also, don't forget that super bust Kylington. Projecting D when they are 16 is very challenging. He looks great, but we shall see. - CanuckDon
Bouchard or Merkley they be good ol' canadian boys |

Agreed. If it was something minor attached to Tanev, I think you'd be smart to acquire a rising asset for a falling one.
It is a more simple approach to acquire picks, I am hoping for some 2018 ones rather than 2017 based on the hype |

Since I'm new I'll stake my flag so you all know where I stand. We need a center so with our first pick I say we take Villardi, Mittlestat or Glass in that order. On the Tanev front I'm leaning slightly in favour of a trade but I'd also be happy to see him stay. - Kevster420
I like your moxie, kid. Although my order is Vilardi, Glass AND THEN Middlestadt. Get off the fence with Tanev buds, his value will never be higher than now and this team is bottom 5 again next year maybe even next few. that puts him at 30 when we start to turn? get him out now, get Edler out two years ago! |

I wonder how many teams will part with them? I love the idea of having two lotto odds at getting a top3 If we traded with a team and they still missed the playoffs that would be amazing |

don't think it will be that high, they need cap relief big time so If we take on Coburn or callahan it shouldn't take much more than Tanev to get it done. Certainly not a first. Jordan Subban and Tanev for drouin, coburn(or callahan). They get cap relief, propect and lock up their top4 at a reasonable price. |

Tanev to Dallas for Niemi, 2017 1st & 2018 conditional 1st (if Dallas makes the playoffs next year we get their 1st, don't make them we get their 2nd)
Jamie Benn is getting paid 13 mil next year. |

I'd even be fine if the Canucks got involved in a 3 team deal where they give up Tanev, some other team ends up with Drouin and VAN gets the draft pick haul. Hell, toss a bad contract over too |

I agree with the canadian kids but to not draft a guy like that is crazy his numbers are better than mathews at the same age or to say no to dahlin who might be the best dman prospect of all time.
Next draft also has 2 number 1 type Right shot canadians. Hopefully we end up bottom 4 next year - mauryballstein
Next years draft does look very good. This might be a little excessive about Dahlin and Svechnikov but if you guys are in the same spot next year youre bound for some better luck in the lottery you would hope |

gives them room to go out and sign bishop or mason. I like it and the conditional seems reasonable. Lethonen makes more sense for them than Niemi though. |

Teams usually don't trade potential lotto picks ...after this year it will be even more unlikely |

I hope Canucks draft Heiskanen with he 5 th and Ratcliffe with the 33 . It will be fun to hear Hefty complain all year about no one to replace Hank and Onesmallleap pissing off Lefty more by saying to extend Hank |
