He had one good game against us, mostly on the power play but other than that was pretty unnoticeable aside from a few times when he mauled guys down to the ice. Ellis F'in killed us though. - fattyboubatty
Subban was great in the first 2 games, and along with Ekholm, he did shut down Tarasenko in games 3 to 6 though. Tarasenko had scored 2 goals against Ellis-Josi in game 2, so changing the match up paid off for Laviolette. Subban didn't do much offensively in those games, but credits to the Blues forwards who didn't leave him much space to make plays. |

Here lies Pie, a guy,..sometimes we didn't see eye to eye.
But I'm sure a fish he could fry.

Well, Jennifer is NOT talking as if he's "doing it all on his own". She correctly points out, however, that Nashville utilizes him according to his strengths, rather than trying to mould him into something he's not in order to satisfy the hierarchical nature of the Habs' "system". Weber clearly fits the "Montreal system" better than Subban--but, and with all due respect to Weber, that's an argument AGAINST "the system" when one has a talent like Subban (or Karlsson, or any number of high talent players). What Boucher did with Karlsson, and Laviolette did with Subban, is respect the fact they are extremely talented players and persuade them to adapt to the coach's plans WITHOUT simply trying to make them into something they aren't. In each case, they approached their players WITHOUT the intent to "break" them--something Therrien/Bergevin clearly did intend for Subban (as Tremblay did with Roy decades ago; and Lemaire did with Lafleur, further back--how did those pissing contests go, incidentally?).
Either a coach works with the strengths of the players on hand and adjusts accordingly, or a coach insists on "breaking" players who don't fit the mould--because the coach is "THE BOSS". The first approach is far better--better for the player, better for the team and better for the public (much more entertaining to watch). The second is an archaic remnant of earlier decades (that didn't even work all that well in "the gold old days").
If Therrien/Bergevin had had Bobby Orr on their roster, no doubt they'd have called his rushes into the offensive zone (where he frequently lost the puck, as Subban did in the Colorado game last season, leading Therrien to throw him under the bus) "selfish".
I grew up watching the Habs in the 70s--and while such a collection of talent is impossible in a cap era, having an uptempo, creative and entertaining playing philosophy is not. But when just about everyone making decisions on rosters and playing styles made their living as plumbers, perhaps that creativity simply isn't on hand. If so, time to clean house and join the 21st century. - Ovation
Great post! it's quite the debate! I'd take either if Dmen are not slotted correctly and coached to their strengths they will be exposed and p.k. is more insulated in Nashville, but webber does bring other tangibles to the table, to bad you couldn't have had both!#frank I amagine bergy is on a short leash? |
