Which is solid.

The confusing part to me is how it was all put together.

If we had to wait for his picks to pan out (which would be fine) why did he trade so many, and why did he effectively waste 2 years of Eichel ROR Kane etc.?

- sbroads24

Because Kane and ROR were his picks.

He likely wanted both at some point during his career and when he saw the opportunity to grab them he did.

a rebuild normally takes a long time as there are a lot of pieces to put together...he tried add core pieces by using "murrency" of which he had quite a bit...he took it too far...but that doesn't mean his draft picks won't pan out

That's my argument.

You're giving him full credit for picks made in ottawa as AGM, assuming his fingerprints were all over it. Not Bryan, not Pierre Dorion not Royce who he brought with him.

But here he was GM and while he's a scout by trade, his job gave him far less time to do that, leaving the bulk of that to Royce and co.

I get it in that it's the whole department...we're a few years away from knowing how those sabres picks panned out...it took a long time for their Ottawa picks to have an impact but in hindsight, they were nothing short of awesome when looking at karlsson and how many lower picks blossomed

goes back to what broads was saying, his drafting was his bread and butter. Im sure he was under pressure but why would he constantly abandon the area he's most confident/successful in?

Well there was but for all of 5 seconds lol.

IMO he made some big promises to pegula early on that in the end just never came together.

Pegula is that boss that will give you a shot if you talk yourself up like your the poop (ex. Rex/Rob Ryan, Tim Murray etx.) If you don't prove it your getting the (frank) out of here.

I agree as well about the trade deadline. May have done TM in. I still firmly believe he held out ratter than letting our UFA's go for 4th, 5th, 6th maybe. How many ELITE NHL players can you name that were 6th round picks or higher?

i know someone will come in and post a percentage of nhl success chart regarding these picks but the fact is 5%>0%

most of us are hinging a lot of the future of this team on 2nd to 7th round picks

Guhle and Petersen are the two most talked about guys....2nd and Petersen was what a 5th rounder?

random but Calgary has no 2nd or 3rd rounder this year...we have two of each no?

Might be a deal there for someone, maybe klimchuk?

I don't need them to be elite players. I need them to be good players that fill in depth positions so that I don't have to go out and make so many trades for the Dmitri Kulikovs of the world.

if you can pull something like these off it is worth a flier on a former 1st.. but is calgary willing to give up on him for a 3rd? doubt it

I think teams are going to start only picking college players that they can sign the day after the draft. Anyone who says they're going back to school will start to fall to the back half of the draft or not be drafted at all

hard to guess what the price would be but they are more or less set at LW for the forseeable future. Klimchuk had a pretty good year in the A so perhaps not far off and will be cost controlled.

What about giving the team that drafted them unlimited contract rights? For example when Vesey hit the UFA market teams could only offer the rookie max, what if the team that held their rights (Buff), could sign him to, say a 3 year 4 million dollar deal (or whatever they choose) but all other teams could only offer the rookie max as per normal.
It would give the drafting team more of an advantage and maybe more control over their asset, but college kids could still become UFAs if they wanted.
Being able to walk for nothing is stupid.

You might see more players go the college route instead of the Junior route. With the NHL bowing down to the CHL's every request, I doubt that would ever fly.

the leafs started their blow it up rebuild later than us and look where they are now

the guys you kept from the rebuild need to be difference makers, and you need to draft and trade well.

you need to have more than a handful of meaningful players taken after round 2

as long as our carryovers are ennis, foligno,

our vets we traded for like gorges, bogo are blah

our younger players like girgens, mccabe don't take the next step

and our blue chip prospects turn into just plain prospects

we will continue to suffer

i disagree with the idea that we cant get a top 4 without trading eichel. i believe reinhart gets- certainly not a 1- but probably a 2-4, without adding too much. on paper at least, an offer of reinhart should be considered fair value, it might get beat by yzerman offering drouin or sakic offering duchene, but its at least a fair offer.
