side note

I don't think we need 1 stud d man

we need a number 3 on the right hand side that is suppose to be what bogo never became

This was interesting, especially with pastrnak seeing almost 200 mins more 5v5

the leafs started their blow it up rebuild later than us and look where they are now

the guys you kept from the rebuild need to be difference makers, and you need to draft and trade well.

you need to have more than a handful of meaningful players taken after round 2

as long as our carryovers are ennis, foligno,

our vets we traded for like gorges, bogo are blah

our younger players like girgens, mccabe don't take the next step

and our blue chip prospects turn into just plain prospects

we will continue to suffer

- homiedclown

Very valid point. Everyone talks about the rookies this year, and don't get me wrong they were fantastic, but the reason we made the playoffs was because guys like Kadri, JVR and Bozak had big years. Without those guys having good season we don't make playoffs no matter how good the kids played. And we finally have a number one goalie.

Based on that, they'd probably make good line mates

i mean hed push him down in the sense that Trouba can actually handle tough defensive zone minutes. Youd still give the offensive stuff to risto...which they should be trying to do anyways.

Maybe, I just think Pastrnak's a little overrated. IMO as much a "passenger" as 23 is.

Not 5 on 5

5 on 5 points

Risto- 16
Trouba -24

in 400 or so less minutes

The main difference is a bunch of draft slots.

Pastrnak is on the best line in hockey. Reinhart is with one of the best centers in hockey.

i meant with Trouba here, he can take the d-zone minutes risto is seeing way too much of...and you can use him in a more offensive role where hed actually be good. And yes i firmly believe the 5v5 numbers would go up in that scenario.

What about giving the team that drafted them unlimited contract rights? For example when Vesey hit the UFA market teams could only offer the rookie max, what if the team that held their rights (Buff), could sign him to, say a 3 year 4 million dollar deal (or whatever they choose) but all other teams could only offer the rookie max as per normal.
It would give the drafting team more of an advantage and maybe more control over their asset, but college kids could still become UFAs if they wanted.
Being able to walk for nothing is stupid.

- Sabres1523

Yeah something like that, or compensatory picks if the drafted player won't sign. Or, if a college player won't sign with the team that drafted them, then he can't play in the NHL for two years (AHL or Europe only)

this link just gave me the default one of mathews, marner and nylander but i assume it was supposed to be trouba/risto?

I know trouba will look way better in this, hes a better all around guy than risto in general.

All im saying is Ristolainens 5v5 production would go up with less ice time (and less d-zone starts) and more offensive situations and there quite a few indicators for that.

Trouba is the better d-man though

I don't need them to be elite players. I need them to be good players that fill in depth positions so that I don't have to go out and make so many trades for the Dmitri Kulikovs of the world.

He is better in every category you posted about Pasta/Sam by a mile than Risto.

Not sure why the link didn't work

Second bolded- You literally can say this about any player, ever.

More offensive zone starts = more points.

Let's also not pretend that Ristolainen wasn't given time in the offensive zone with ROR and/or Eichel at 5 on 5, because he was given more than any other D.

We both agree that our 5 on 5 scoring will increase with better D men, well, 55 is the D man with the most ice time 5 on 5. This goes back to seemingly absolving him from any responsibility

you can? plenty of examples of d-man who have seen their zone starts change and their stats not change...Ghost is the most extreme example

im not trying to absolve him of responsibility i was referring specifically to 5v5 point totals.

I think hes seeing too much ice time and too much of it in the wrong third of the ice. Thats not me saying hes a better player but combination of eye test and numbers tells me we've got an offensive defencemen playing a defensive defencemens role. thats....not good.

Erie Otters Defenseman Darren Raddiysh will be a a free agent at the end of the season and eligible to be signed by an NHL team.

Could be a potential signing for the Sabres

Again, that's not entirely true.

It's not like he's only taking defensive zone draws, he takes plenty of offensive ones too, with our best players.

He had the 44th most offensive zone starts out of D men with 400+ minutes
