He could even take average songs and cover them and make them great. And he alone wrote 99% of the music. These days most songs are written by committee

That's not necessarily true. Lots of bands are run by a single visionary songwriter that rules with an iron fist. It's not uncommon at all.

Nirvana is mildly popular with teens today
Soundgarden not so much
