He's a 6th round pick who is progressing well. You sign guys like that without a second thought as the best way to make sure you stay good for a long time is by having a large pipeline of prospects with the hopes that a few break through consistently and fill out your pro team at cheap cap hits. - kingcong39
Thank You, There are guys like Estephan all over the landscape of the NHL, I get tired of reading that a guy can only be a fringe player because he was drafted in the 5th or 6th round. Organizational depth is very important to the success of any team and coming from Pittsburgh GMJB knows that. The Sabres are in no position to stick up their nose at anybody, They need to turn over every stone to turn this team around.

This will be a good read for you,
and I'm not being condescending here at all
Based of this extremely thorough (and well written imo) article:
Estephan has an 8.3% likelihood of even being a top9 forward
And only about an 85% of even playing 100 NHL games
The average player picked in his spot is typically a career minor leaguer, who plays less than 50 NHL games
Just so u don't have to read the whole article:
10 - Generational
9 - Elite Player
8 - First Line, Top Pair D
7 - Top Six Forward, Top Four D
6 - Top Nine Forward, Top Six D
5 - NHL Regular, 350+ NHL games
4 - Fringe NHLer, 200+ NHL games
3 - Very Good Minor Leaguer, 50-200 NHL games
2 - Minor Leaguer, under 50 NHL games
1 - 10 or fewer NHL games
No. 151-165
Average Rating: 1.79
Best: Peter Bondra, Brian Campbell, Andrei Markov, James Wisniewski
Ranked 7 or better: 4.4%
Ranked 5 or worse: 91.7%
At least 100 NHL games (or extremely likely): 15.6%
His good numbers in years 3 & 4 of the WHL aren't enough to convince me that he'll be the Datsyuk of his draft class...
hell...
he probably won't even be the Paul Gaustad (7th round)
Sign him? YES! Absolutely... I've said this repeatedly
But the kid hasn't even played a game in Rochester yet...
so I'm holding off on taking the opinion that he's a serious prospect for us
Not saying he sucks...
just that some ppl are going overboard with their expectations
Doesn't really make much difference to me either way
If ppl wanna give Murray credit for Antipin, that's cool
If not, whatever
I'm ready to move on from Murray - jdfitz77
Doesn't even happen without Murray is my guess. One of those players who Murray likely sniffed out of the weeds. Juts a guess though ............. seems like a Murray find.

From what I read,
There were multiple teams after him
And that was before the KHL playoffs & the Worlds
So I guess you could give Murray the credit for selling him on us...
if that's how it went down?
Tough to say for sure
But like I said...
If ppl wanna give GMTM the credit, I'm cool with that
Hopefully Antipin works out though
That's all I really care about
Not about who does or doesn't get credit for him

I liked murray more than most. I liked his initial vision when he came here, and i liked that he changed it when it was apparent that getting faster was how we would need to compete in the east. His failings were not addressing the defense and all things regarding bylsma. I get that the market for d went crazy, and that cost him his job. I get the sense that botterill is going to be much more patient, and thats probably a good thing, but it wont help for a few years. So we will draft liljegren or makar at 8 and wait. A less aggressive gm would look at our roster and see kane as our most tradeable asset, and that will not get us a piece on d that gets us 96 points next year.

I know Kane is our most tradeable asset but I really want to see the Sabres re-sign him. We are a team sorely lacking in speed, toughness and scoring from the wings, and Kane brings all of that. Maybe our cap-genius gm can make it work on a reasonable cap hit and term.

Agreed, as soon as we trade him we are looking for a player similar to replace him, and they are just not easy to find...problem is can he be trusted off ice, and is he part of the locker room chemistry problems we hear about.

What happens if Kane doesn't want to resign here? Then obviously Botterill has to move him.
