Once again the NHL has proven that just getting to the playoffs has to be the goal. The 16th seed is going to play for the cup.

true, but they were built like a true contender from day one. especially with that d-core.

Rinne let them down in the regular season, but hes been en fuego. Would never have expected that after the last two years.

Yep, yet another team riding a hot goalie.

Don't get me wrong Nashville has been good, but Rinne has been out of this world.

Possibly the most underrated goalie in the NHL for a good 7 or 8 years now.

Lehner's career save percentage is higher than Rinne, and 3 of Rinne's last 5 seasons he's posted save percentages of .910 or under, I think he's pretty average but obviously on fire now

He's been pretty bad the last 3 years or so. Before that he was amazing, but the last 3 he's been average at best, and oft-injured.

But I thought the Goalie position doesn't really matter?

I remember reading here how they're all basically the same outside of the top few guys

ANOTHER example of how Analytics does NOT tell the whole story

That's my whole point. Any goalie can get hot for a couple weeks. People who say making the playoffs as an 8 seed doesn't make you a contender are wrong. It happens every 5 years or so lately.

I think a hot goalie and some good bounces can win you 4 out of 7 games

Pekka Rinne is the type of goaltender you win with nowadays. You don't need a great goaltender. You need a good goaltender capable of going on a great stretch.

its not an analytics observation, just a regular one. You need your goalie to get hot, but these days the way pads are and how huge tenders are just about any decent starter can get hot.

Pekka Rinne was trash during the regular season. if i had said he was going to have a run like this everyone would laugh and rightfully so.

They're supposed to be nuts this year. There's a White-Footed Mouse in NYS that I guess is one of the biggest, if the not biggest carrier of deer ticks.

Analytics would just say that it was luck

I'll say that Rinne has been a goalie over his career who has proven to be this capable quite a bit

Would I have predicted this? Nope
But I'm not super surprised either
Especially with that defense helping him out

How bad were Nashville's defensemen tonight according to analytics vs how good we all know they really are?

Every year there's a team that rides a hot goalie. Last year it was Pittsburgh.

In other words, he's not a great goaltender. He's a good goaltender that's playing a great stretch of hockey.

Sure...
but it's not "luck"

My problem is that Analytics doesn't tell the ENTIRE story
And quite often, when things arise that Analytics can't quantify...
like Anaheim massively ourshooting the Preds tonight but still losing...
I hear that referred to as "luck"

Luck isn't why Scossons scored the winner tonight
Or any of his goals really
It was hustle & determination

Can't put a number on that

And Crosby & Malkin
And that 3rd line that tore it up for them

Obviously Nashville isn't here without Rinne playing so well
But even though Analytics can't explain it...
watching how well he's been in the past,
and seeing how good he's played all playoffs...

Is it really all that surprising?
