I don't know why BMW called them coupé's. To me it's more reminiscent of a present-day shooting-brake.
I don't have any problem with them. Thought both the roadster and coupé Z3 looked better overall than the next gen E85/E86 Z4. And while the E86 was more of a coupé (with a fastback hatch) and thus looked sleeker, the E36/8 back end was perhaps more practical for those who had them. |

It'll be one flattened Golf then.
I had a 1979 Rabbit. Their gas crisis version. 1.6L. Peppy but only 4 gears and the speedo only went up to 80mph. You were really pushing it if you got up to 65 anyway. There was no tach so you just had to listen to the revs to know when to shift. It actually handled pretty well compared to other small vehicles of its vintage. It was our first FI, and electronic at that, and it was pretty flawless. And like its Beetle ancestor, it didn't drain your wallet when something had to be fixed, unlike what comes out of Germany today.
It actually was a Westmoreland Rabbit. So unfortunately, the body went kaput before the powertrain. And because it was a gas crisis model, it didn't come with AC. And that was pretty bad because the seats and door cards were vinyl, not to mention the cheap plastics used everywhere else in the interior. Also, one hot summer (right before we scrapped it), the rubber steering wheel actually melted away.
It did actually get decent gas mileage in the low 40s mpg, but I later had a 1986 Honda CRX that got me better MPG (easily 45avg with low 50s on the highway, and it wasn't the HF version; supposedly the 1.3L used in the 1984 debut model year got up to 70mpg). But remember these cars didn't have any real crash protection and safety devices besides primitive crumple zones. Just the powertrain and a lightweight monocoque body. |
