Sure. Just an example, but let's say Nashville was thinking of adding a goalie prospect to the system. Rinne is playing lights out, but he's 34. I'd imagine that would set Cal up nicely to start, not only sooner, but for a better defensive core. That helps his numbers and secures a higher dollar amount on his next contract.
I still really, really hope he signs. I really like his style (I am a goalie myself). Just don't think it's in the cards. - RhinoFan
i have never watched him play.. which is kind of sad considering i am in South Bend all the time. |

Botterill has his work cut out for him there. But they did just sign Antipin so that's a step in the right direction (or so it would seem). More than likely he wouldn't be at the NHL level this year anyway, so that gives them a bit more time to fix that problem as well. - HonkFortheGoose
I sure hope antipin works out. that is a huge add if he does. |

In general, we have Lehner, Ullmark, and Johansson. Kasdorf is a non-factor. Johansson for sure needs to get time under his belt in NA. While I think he could be good, he needs time to continue to develop.
That basically means that if Lehner or Ullmark are left unprotected, there's a good possibility that one of them are gone to start the season. That means that Petersen would be the next guy up. Pretty good odds if you ask me.
I don't know a ton about some of the other goaltending prospect pools as goaltending is a total crap shoot for the most part. But it seems to me we'd be in a good position in terms of him having a chance in the more near future than not. - HonkFortheGoose
If Ullmark is taken (can't see Lehner being left exposed), then I think there is a glimmer of hope, but I think Carrier could just as easily be the target, not to mention the fact that if the Sabres work out a deal for a cap dump like Ennis then this takes their draft selection away, leaving us with both again.
It would depend on how it turns out. The expansion isn't until the 21st so if he is making his decision this week than he won't know that outcome. Can't imagine he's assuming who Las Vegas will grab just because one of them will be exposed. |

Nashville has Juuse Saros who was pretty good for them this year. (2.35 GAA and .923 sv% in 21 games). He's also only 22, so my guess would be they're looking for him to back up Rinne next year. Nashville seems to have a good goaltending development program overall, as a lot of guys have come through there and done well. |

Also Lehner is without a contract...
I don't see why its a given Petersen is gone... |

The expansion draft certainly throws an extra element into the whole thing, that's for sure. People keep pointing out all the goalies that will be available, but at the same time, I can easily see why Vegas could go for a guy like Ullmark. Already gone through the development at the AHL level, will be cheap for a bit and someone they can build the rest of the team around as he's young. Even if they don't take him as their main guy for this year, I could still see him being a part of the overall plan (basically probably as backup this year at minimum).
But you're right, we have no idea how things will work out. I still think that the favor Murray mentioned McPhee owed him was going to be that they were going to leave Ullmark unprotected and that Vegas wouldn't take him. Not sure if that favor is still "owed" now that Murray is gone. |

Ullmark also needs a contract. Technically, there is one goaltender under contract for the Sabres. Jason Kasdorf. |

Apologize, forgot about him. It's his height...looked right over the top of him. Now that I think of it I think Nashville actually has another decent goalie prospect.
Edit: Swap out Smashville and add in Winnipeg? |

He's definitely not the biggest. They have another guy listed on CapFriendly, but I don't know that I remember hearing his name ever, so I'm not sure how good he is. |

I originally thought he had signed that when he came over at the end of the year. But apparently it was just an Amateur Try out contract. |

If you go to CapFriendly, there's a mock Expansion draft you can do. They have an option that you can select where it defaults the protected players to what most people seem to expect to be protected. The list of goalies available is a bit interesting and terrible all at the same time. |

honestly, the more I think about it
this was probably the 3rd worst call I have seen on a goal in the playoffs
1. was clearly no goal number 2, where the puck entered from the side of the net, not through the net
2. when brett hull parked his fat a$$ in the crease and they shoved #99 out there the next day to lie and say he thought it was a good goal
3. the "offside" from last night - homiedclown
nice...forgot about that first one |

he was having trouble dealing with the fact that he was making $4.5M in Buffalo for doing practically nothing and had this crazy notion that it was like being in jail...so he busted out some crayons and brought forth this emotion using the artistry of a 2nd-grader |

Maybe he's trying to show that he's as good of an artist and clothing designer as he is a hockey player.

Cause nothing says well adjusted like being paid a crap ton of money and dealing with the pressure to perform by drawing some f'd up starfish, a cross, and stealing my five year old son's drawings on some sweatshirts.
Good gravy, he's a hole and some lotion away from a messed up dancing scene in the Silence of the Lambs. |
