he can't sign with a team other than Buffalo prior to the expansion draft since he doesn't officially become a UFA until July 1st. - HonkFortheGoose
So then technically, he's still being exposed by buffalo right now. It's kinda a moot point, as he's not getting selected. I was under the impression that Vegas could sign players early, ufa that is, and that player would then be considered the player taken from that team. Could be wrong on this though.

They get 48 hours prior to the expansion draft to sign RFAs or UFAs. If a player does sign with Vegas during that window, they are then Vegas's pick from the team the player was on.
So using Nilsson as an example...if he signs with Vegas during that 48 hour period, that means that we're done in terms of losing a player to Vegas in the expansion draft. The rest of our roster is safe.

EDIT: This is just for the players that teams leave unprotected. So if you have an RFA but you have him on your list of protected players, Vegas can't negotiate with him.

Ok thanks for the explanation. That's what I had thought, as to make every player "exposed" with the UFA's getting a chance to negotiate, while players under contract are just fully exposed.
I would be ecstatic if Vegas took Bogo off our hands. How high a price of a sweetener would people be willing to pay to take him (or Moulson or Ennis, if thats your fancy)? I wouldn't want to go higher than a 3rd, myself.
Another interesting situation playing out is with Buffalo goaltending prospect Cal Petersen. The 22-year-old completed his junior season at Notre Dame and announced earlier this week that he was turning pro.
The Sabres have 30 days to get Petersen signed before he becomes an unrestricted free agent that can be signed by another team on August 15, which is the same road that Jimmy Vesey went last season and Petersen and Colorado draft pick (and 2017 Hobey Baker winner) Will Butcher seem to be headed down.
Petersen and Butcher’s negotiating rights could be trade chips used by Buffalo and Colorado prior to the Expansion Draft with the Golden Knights or to get a draft pick at the NHL Draft in Chicago.

I guess the rights to Peterson could be a trade chip, but I expect the return to be small. Cal will prefer to negotiate with 31 teams, rather than just one. see:Vesey, James.

I still think best scenario would be if they were traded for each other.
