I agree with dukey, build through the draft! but it would depend on who could be available to you? Dumba, trouba, Manson? Those guys who are in their early 20s are more in line with this core! And any pick at 8 could potentially take 2to4 years of development, who knows? But this is where your scouting department is of crucial importance

at the time murray made the trades for kane and o'reilly the sabres had nothing to speak of on offense, especially at center...despite his off-ice/locker room woes, kane was still regarded as a pretty damn good talent with a 30-goal season under his belt and o'reilly was considered one of the best two-way centers in the game...if you're a team that desperately needs help who happens to have an abundance of assets to get a deal done for premier players that aren't even available july 1 anymore, wouldn't you do it?

I think we need 1 impact player on defense, one at FWD (actual impact player, like a 30-35 goal 60 point player) and we will be in decent shape.

Problem is Murray decimated the assets we could have used to get one of them.

Need to hit a home run at 8, or use it to get a core piece

That's my biggest issue with TM he had so many options and it seemed like when he wanted a specific guy, he just threw picks and prospects at the other GM until the deal was to good for the other GM to pass on.
The Fasching deal along with the price paid to acquire guys like kulikov and bogo, just boggle my mind when trying to understand what TM was thinking.
Just thinking about the team we COULD have if TM just played the waiting game, I mean we could be talking about how well Eichel and Laine played together, or what a good 1+2 combo Eichel and Matthews are.......
Not like he dealt cast off prospects or low round picks that miraculously turned out for the other team, he was sending off blue chip prospects and high end draft picks.

For a couple of years he was projected only behind Patrick! Then an injury and or mono? Happen and he took a step back, again the scouting departments are hopefully prepared for this year's crop, cause the talent is apparently so close(especially dmen) you don't want to be the team that passed on perhaps the next, dare I say Karlsson?
- MR.Hunter

Mikhail Grigorenko was considered a top prospect but also had mono and eventually dropped down the board to No. 12

I know the mono excuse has come up repeatedly for him but his 'between the ears' work has been under criticism for some time now and is one of the reasons he was left off the WJ team (he was healthy enough to play).

I can overlook things like size and even scoring ability, but im so sick of low iq players on our blueline. The question marks around that are enough for me to say no.

That plus the fact that in this draft you could potentially get as good as or even better d-men in the middle of the first (like Brannstrom) and add a pick or two.

Exactly, mono was the excuse not the reason. He dropped for other glaring reasons that we only really noticed once he got here.

You could be right? and theirs Brannstrom who is projected to go around anywhere from 15 to 30ish ?can't remember but I do remember Karlsson being passed by, what was it 15 clubs? man it would be great if somehow buffalo could somehow get another 1st! Even in the latter round could kane do it? somehow seems unlikely? Who knows what the market is? But in 40 years of watching the game I've never seen so much speculation of trades and movement

a couple things:

--we know mcnabb has slipped mightily on the depth chart in la and we're not even sure where those two 2nd-rounders will end up

Kane was the primary player murray wanted in the wpg trade although he liked bogo enough to make for a blockbuster...that said, myers and staff helped the jets to the playoffs but myers is having injury problems and staff was eventually traded...armia's a bottom-six player right now, Lemieux is approaching bust status and the jury's still out on jack roslovic

just sayin

we could have used the two seconds for ourselves or in another trade

we could have moved armia, lemieux and the first for a different player that didnt require us taking bogosian back

ok...but for what in return?

my point all along is that premier players don't come along very often...sabres had the assets to get the job done

And my point is they didn't. You're right, premier players dont come along very often. You're supposed to draft them. Of the moves murray made he got maybe one.

Yes I agree! But just not at any cost of course! O'Reilly is fine,Kanes talent was never a question mark, but character was! And bringing any players at any stage of their careers be it prospects or especially veteran free agent/trade players when rebuilding you must insure your core of younger players are insulated from certain attitudes and hopefully any off ice distractions, I personally never liked the trade! It never did anything for the organization in its growth or leadership department! But that's just me

premier players usually aren't found in the second round or even the lower first round of the draft, that's why trading them for established, top-six young-vets isn't as offensive to me as it is to some

cant use them to move up? sure longer odds, but still a shot. more picks, more likely you are to find a gem.

I trust the guys who watch it with some sort of regularity more than the "draft sites" who come up with generic stereotypical scouting reports for players
