Assuming Cal doesn't sign here ... what are your thoughts on trading up to draft a goalie (Oettinger) ... seems like our pipeline is pretty thin without Cal

Nah. No need to waste assets to move up for a goalie. They are far too unpredictable. If hes there in the 2nd then maybe but im fine with rolling the dice on a later round guy.
Just read the article. I'm not going to read through 9 pages of comments, but just wanted to point something out. The Pens didn't tank for Sid. They actually played well through the last quarter of the 03',04' season. Their size for being bad was Malkin. They missed out on Ovie because they did play well to end the season.
That said, great write up in general. Buffalo in in good hands. Can't wait to see what JB can build there.

If i had to guess though, a lot of the canadian owners who are actual individuals (not companies like Bell) have a large portion of their holdings in USD. It seems like a convenient excuse. Of course teams like FLA and CAR probably don't mind a low cap either. Plus, you can exclude MTL and TML from any currency talk, because those two teams could turn a profit using Zimbabwe's currency - jcragcrumple
Just to correct you there. Yes, they did tank in order to get Lemieux. That is well documented, and it was a brilliant. I'm sure if teams could turn back time, they would do the exact same thing. BUT, in terms of Crosby, Pittsburgh did not tank in order to get Sid. They were just bad. Terrible would be the more apt descriptor. I remember those years. We lost Jagr, Straka, and Kovalev because the team could no longer afford them, and got players like Rico Fata, Milan Kraft, and Kostantin Koltsov. A cast of characters that no respectable team would want, unless you were dead broke. Which Pittsburgh was at that time. They were hard years, and it was hard to be a paying fan. The Great Richard Tarnstrom and Ryan Malone were the only things to be excited about (which was sad in retrospect). But I honestly do not believe they tanked on purpose to get Crosby. They just sucked enough to get the right #1 pick at the right time. - simethos
No they didn't, they were just that incompetent, but they were in the second level up from the bottom in odds to get Crosby, so they really lucked out there. I think there were 4 teams? including Buffalo who had the best odds.
The apparently highly talented 1983-84 Penguins deviously lost their last 6 games in a row and secured the #1 slot in the 1984 draft.
Lost down the memory hole somewhere is the fact that the 1983-84 Devils lost their last EIGHT games in a row and won exactly once in their last 13 games, but I'm sure they were losing on merit alone and by no means "tanking".
The Devils' big mistake came in their 14th-to-last game of that season, when they beat the Penguins by the score of 6-5, and that made all the difference in the end -- had the outcome been reversed and the rest of the season gone the way it did, NJD would have had 39 points to Pittsburgh's 40 and would have had Mario. They just didn't quite tank well enough. - ab1
he was also hella sheltered and still got poop on. shot generation about average and shot suppression well below that.
Im not saying hes going to be bad, the original point i was making was about ceiling and the pick stepping in right away. in general i want someone with the higher ceiling that may take some time vs the guy who can step in right away but whose impact may be that of a 3 or 4. - Sabresfan-365
Maclins first choice was buffalo. He would of signed. He wanted 8 million a year.the bills offered 4 million a year - Buffalo39
They made a final offer this afternoon before he signed in Baltimore. We'll see how much he ended up signing for, but it's going to be way less than half what he was making in KC.

Seems like I might be the only one that's glad the Sabres are sticking with Navy (though I expect it to change in the next couple of years due to fan uproar). I just don't see the big deal with the Royal Blue.

David Pagnotta is saying that Fluery has waived his NMC (for expansion only, which was known earlier) but Fluery also submitted his 12 team no trade list. The only one David knows on that 12 team list... Buffalo.
I'm glad cause I dont want him, but the hits just keep coming. lol - Lilroot9
That guy is less credible than Eklund. It's an obvious troll. He's a Laffs fan.

Our blue is so dark it looks black on anything except a 1080p HDTV. That's the problem. Our current uniforms are (frank)ing hideous.
There was a huge rumor we were switching to royal blue and ditching the piping and grey. Both the draft hat and adidas preview show the grey and piping still, yet promotional images on sabres.com show an updated logo with no piping.
I'm not so sure they aren't planning to surprise us, that draft cap image looked almost photoshopped, the adidas logo at least.

underacheiving isnt the same as being a risky or safe pick. girgs was your classic try hard grinder that was projected to be solid. same with pysyk "safe reliable smooth" classic buzzwords for defencemen who will be boring as poop.
Kassian...maybe. There's always one guy like that in every draft the "lucic 2.0" thing that one team falls for every year.
