My point is most teams/owners would do this of they could, money is not relevant when it isn't hitting the cap.
- Mentalorgasm5

I understand your side of it. But they just paid like $500 million to get the team. So its not nothing. In a weaker draft to get pick 24 and prospect (again, depends on who this really is) for $15 million might not be worth it.

1. moved on from whaley and have a young set of eyes for coach and gm

2. refused to overpay woods and gilmore

3. managed to get 3 starters at the draft and an extra first rd pick for 2018

4. Micah Hyde, yeah he is really good

5. picked up o line depth, wr depth secondary depth

6. brought back Alexander on the cheap

7. Jordan Poyer is going to be a decent player

8. grabbing 2 decent fb's for goal line, 3rd and short and the kid from atlanta will catch 30-40 passes

- homiedclown

After #1...
all those moves are similar to what teams all around the league do
Nothing special in there at all
They haven't done close to enough

Over/under last year's win total....
under, no doubt

The only thing they MIGHT have done was keep us bad enough to get a legit QB in next year's draft... hopefully

I agree, I'm jealous. I think the sabres could have afforded to do this with Clarkson going on LTIR. In the off-season they area plowed to go 5% over the cap(I believe).
- Mentalorgasm5

good point, 'cept they didn't even put mccormick on ltir last season...which was strange to me considering Pegula isn't afraid to spend money and they were closely watching their cap-space throughout the year

New draft scenario for fun:

Sabres trade down to the mid first round and pick up an extra 2nd round pick:

Sabres take Callen Foote or Brannnstrom

Use 2 seconds to get back into the bottom of the first round and take Vaakanainen or Hague

Draft forwards the rest of the draft

but it is for vegas. They aren't a cap strapped team. even post expansion draft and probably for the next 2 years minimum they will be a floor team and probably spend among the fewest of the nhl teams. They basically spent a bit up front to speed up youth development.

The early years are critical for an expansion team so anything they can do to add young talent is worth doing.

- Sabresfan-365

I understand it is a good idea to do this but it does not mean they want or can do this.

I can see them taking on salary for a guy still playing, but someone on LTIR, not sure.

Oh well, whatever.

At a time when the Penguins were in real jeopardy due to their old arena. Just like the favorable Kovalchuk retirement when the devils were in dire financial straits. I don't trust the league
- jcragcrumple

This x100. Perhaps the most corrupt league next to the NFL, imo.

you're talking about the same franchise that openly tanked to get Mario Lemieux...and Lemieux was the owner of the pens at the time they drafted Crosby...

the nhl knew for years that Crosby was a once in a generation player, so did the pens, so did lemieux

- Michael Pachla

Stop making sense.

I have a good fried from CLEVELAND and he's a raging Pens fan and he still sees the corruption about as well as Stevie Wonder.

Trading the 8th overall for Brodin is foolish.

I really might give up on the Sabres if this happens.

There wasn't even an NHL season before Sid was drafted, so they didn't even have the chance to tank the season because of the NHL lockout... so there's that...
- j.boyd919

Which, if you want to go there, means that everyone should have had equal odds to win the lottery that season, since there wasn't a season before the best player since Lemeuix was about to be drafted.

So, there is that.

The Sabres had the same number of "balls" to win too. Just saying. I do think it was fixed, but not from a tanking stand point.

Friedman says he thinks CBJ & VGK have a deal where David Clarkson lands in Vegas, along with a 1st + prospect (960).

- chilliard77

Interesting
Vegas had some good potential choices from Cbj
Korpisalo could've been their future goalie
Jack Johnson is a decent defenseman they could've gotten a decent return for if they didn't wanna keep him
And a forward like Jenner may have been available

That prospect must be top level to pass all that up

Im hoping that even without a trade down that we may be able to move back into the 1st with our two seconds.

Been away for awhile, was pretty busy with other things and didn't have much to contribute to the board during the cup finals but now that, that's over with...

What's the general pulse on this board on who they think the coach is going to be?

I'm sure most if not everyone wants Housley but do most people like myself expect it to be Tocchet?

- bluengold12

39 said it is going to be Housley 100%

quantity might be the better approach in this kind of draft. I dont really know how much of a gap (if at all) there is between picking 36 or whatever and picking 26th

Ding ding ding ding ding. The NHL has said numerous times, they're comitted to keeping teams that have won the cup from relocating.

Get used to the Carolina Hurricanes and their empty arena for a looooong time.

Right, but I'm saying that every single NHL team should have had the same odds of winning the lottery that season, since there was no season beforehand.

I agree everyone should have been equal. Their thought was "Teams were assigned 1 to 3 balls based on their playoff appearances and first overall draft picks from the past three years. " So they had that thought then, but when the Oilers win it 3 times, why not 4? Such crap. I hate being bitter about this stuff, but come on.

And so from what you are saying, Carolina should win the lottery next year. I will be watching for that. Such crap.

that would have meant that the defending Stanley cup champs, TBL, could have won...or the powerhouse wings...the avs, boston, Toronto, etc....
