I just finished my new album (finished give or take a few vocal takes). Anybody want to listen to an early release version and give me some reviews/feedback? |

That's not right. You're allowed to go back to Junior after 9 games. Grigorenko played 25 and he still went back to the Q. You're just not allowed to come back to the NHL unless under an emergency.
The only thing that happens after 9 games is you burn a year on the ELC. And after 40 you get a year toward UFA. - Wetbandit1
It still counts as a pro season after 9 games hence using a year of his ELC.
Reinhart played 9 so his ELC didn't kick in |

It's gotta be from the first season you play 10+. Because after the first time you play 10 games in a season it stops being relevant and the only milestone that matters is the 40 game one.
It would just be nice to see the official rules. |

Playoff games do not count. AHL games do not count. Suspension/injury does not count. Drouin played 21 games in 15-16. He might've been on the roster in the press box at the beginning of the season, so those games would count toward the 40/41, but it wasn't 20 games.
Again, I'm not saying he he shouldn't need to be protected. I'm asking why he is. And no one can give me an official answer. - Wetbandit1
then how is it that carrier needs to be protected? |

Does anybody follow baseball? Do they do whacky poop like this too? I know they do the weird roster thing where you can have like 40 guys on the team after a certain date. TDL I think? |

september is when rosters expand, but those added after that day arent eligible for the playoffs.
and yea there are some wacky stuff in baseball too like outrighting players, minor league options etc. |

They don't count for burning a year or UFA. They never used to count for anything. Is there an age thing?

I know there's weird poop for players at the bottom, they can be on like 6 teams a year, because of all the movement. |

6 seems like a lot but yea there's a lot of movement, particularly because minor leagues finish their seasons at really different times. |

I was reading an article about it at the beginning of the season about a pitcher I think, and he'd be on a team, on paper only for a few hours and then get sent down, played somewhere for a few weeks, and then a team would pick him up for a few days but they told him to not bother reporting, and then he'd get sent down again. There's some weird loophole that allows all those moves. |

Well, I think the official answer has to be inferred from the only official thing the NHL has put out about eligibility: First and second year pros are exempt. And given what we know, I think it's pretty easy to infer that Drouin's second year counts as a professional year.
We know for purposes of determining if someone is a first or second year pro that AHL seasons count as professional years. There's no way to infer otherwise. Carrier has played 41 total NHL games, all in 16-17. In 14-15 and 15-16, he played exclusively in the AHL. So the NHL is counting AHL and NHL games, at the very least, to determine how many professional years a player has. Cole Schneider is also apparently eligible. He's played 6 NHL games.
Even professional years in other countries must count. Ullmark has played two seasons in North America, and only 21 games in the NHL. The league must be counting his years as a pro in Sweden when considering him eligible for selection.
So I think the question is very simply this: " How many years has the player been in a professional hockey league?" If the answer is anything other than 1 or 2, he's eligible for the expansion draft. |

I'm watching/listening to all these Housley/Botterill interviews about Housley's familiarity with Jake McCabe. It would be kind of funny if the Sabres ended up moving him this summer. - buffalofan19
I'd say the chance of that happening is very, VERY, low. Now that Phil is here. |

So then we have to protect Antipin too? He's 24 and has played in the KHL for a long time.
This is why I would love to see the rules so we don't have to draw inferences from 14 different places. AHL counts after 20, playoffs don't count for anything, players play in the playoffs for free, 9 games for this 40 games for that. A nice easy legalese document. Is that too much to ask for? |

Baseball also has more than one trade deadline. They have two drafts every year, too, with one of them happening during the actual season. Baseball's roster rules are crazy and pretty confusing. |

I thought about Antipin after my post. But I think the answer there is that he isn't technically a Buffalo Sabre until the next league year begins (7/1/17) and his contract kicks in.
I think the league year thing is why players like Eichel aren't 3rd year pros yet. They don't actually begin their third year until after the expansion draft because technically this is still the 2016-17 season for 15 more days. |

I don't know. He's under contract as of right now. And that matters for certain things for expansion, but not others. |

I don't know and that's my point. I've yet to see the official rules that haven't already been filtered through someone else.
He only has 2 pro seasons because you don't have a season until you play 41 games. You can still be a "rookie" the year after you play 40 games.
Kotalik played 13 games in his first season with the Sabres, and the next season he was still a rookie. The main milestones are 10 games, burns a year on ELC, and 41, accrued year.
It's a "free" year because he didn't play enough. It doesn't matter why you don't play. Grigorenko had to be sent down at game 40 even though he only played in 25 games, because if you're on a roster for 41 games that gives you a year. - Wetbandit1
Yeah...
but Drouin didn't play 13 games his first year like Kotalik
He played a full season
So I'm pretty sure that every year after that counts regardless of whether or not I play 41games in that particular season
Once u play a full season, the clock doesn't stop (so to speak) after that
*as far as I know anyways |
