Thornton himself may be. But no problem asking. And if not, Pens should at least target a 2C type for that role. |

Great article Ryan.
I'd be willing to compromise and go 2 years for Thornton. Am worried about a downgrade but for what we want to do it shouldn't be a problem as they can reduce his minutes.
Not sure I put him on the top PP. Why mess with a good recipe and go more perimeter? Maybe use the second unit a little more with Thornton, Guentzel, Schultz, Sheary, Maatta? I'd say 2 PPs with even ice time, but that will never happen here. |

I would be rooting for the Pens again like I did with Kessel's 1st year so I wouldn't like it at all. |

I think a #2D is the most important priority and I'm a little worried about about the cap space for a 2d if Thorton is added. Still, it would be really fun. I can already hear the rallying cry to get Jumbo a cup.
Plus the tears of the Ranger and Flyer fans would be extra salty. Never a bad thing. |

Thornton is TOO OLD!!!
GMJR needs to OFFER SHEET Sam Bennett from CGY!!!!
Sam Bennett is the perfect young player for the PENS!
- That takes care of the 3C issue, and Bennett is a big guy who adds some physicallity and I believe he can be a 2C when Crosby gets his head knocked off once the Pens play WSH or Columbus or NY or NY or really anyone because the NHL doesn't care about the players and concussions!

just because MAF waived his no trade clause doesn't mean he is a gone.so right now he is still a cap hit. i love joe but playing in the east where the game is much faster might hurt his game. just saying |

A few guys might be overpaid, a few under but it probably works out about the same. Can probably remove Sprong as well, at least for now.
I also want to upgrade the defense and there's not enough room to do both, but we could move another salary to make this happen. Move a wing and add back Archibald until Ashton-Reese or Sprong supplants him. |

The leafs should sign him for 4.5mil x2
Jumbo turns rookie wingers into scoring machines. As far as depth goes that's all toronto has.
Pens make more sense if he wants to win the cup like Durant, pulling of a cup miricle would allow him to go out as a legend |

Cullen is going to reitre! Sundqvist or Rowney could easily be the 4C. The Pens would benefit immensely from getting Sam Bennett! He is big! And faster than Thornton or Hanzel or most of the other 3C's talked about here.
The question IS: Can GMJR make the deal to get Sam Bennett? |

Id love to upgrade third pairing as well. Maybe clear out Sprong and Pouliots salary and sign Brendan Smith for the third pairing? |

I think Smith would be good as a 2nd pairing defenseman. I think DP has to play due to waiver eligibility. |

So how about this...just assume these things would work..which would you rather
Sign Thorton and keep defense the same
OR
trade Maatta (+) for Galchenyuk and sign a Brendan Smith/Karl Alzner level D-man |
