They didn't have to sign either one. They were both RFA, that meets the requirements - Sabresfan-365
We've been over this. It does not meet the requirement. At least one has to have a contract or be qualified. |

Current offer I hear. Sam, rights to girgs, 8th pick, nylander for PKane and tbd - Simple
What a cruddy year to tank. Considering the dropoff in talent from the #1 forward taken when we took Reinhart to the year PKane was taken. It would take a # 8, another #8 in Nylander, another former 1st rounder and 3rd line center, and 2nd overall pick - 7-8 years younger to get the convo started to get PKane. |

Except it wasn't all about that year, the prize was always McDavid. If there was no McDavid or Eichel we still would've been bad, we just wouldn't have been that bad. |

couldn't they just qualify him then? Or does that have to happen after the draft? |

Him as in Ullmark? They could've sure, but he was obviously eager to sign. And I'm guessing he was given some sort of assurance that while he'd be exposed he wouldn't be taken. |

I know, it just shows how Reinhart isn't a very special player in a roundabout way. |

Or Maybe Ullmark wants to go to Vegas and he signed a friendly deal to entice Vegas to take him? Who knows? We're operating on 0 real info and maybe worse, internal bias and rumors. |

Ulmark isn't going to be exposed with all these Lehner trade rumors he will be dealt or exposed. |

SABRES IN TALKS ABOUT MULTIPLE PLAYERS
TheFourthPeriod.com
The Buffalo Sabres are believed to be holding trade talks with a number of teams about some of their players.
In addition to left wing Evander Kane, whom Sabres GM Jason Botterill has made known he's willing to trade, Buffalo is also exploring the marketplace on goalie Robin Lehner and center Sam Reinhart.
Kane, 25, is entering the final-year of his six-year, $31.5 million contract and can become an unrestricted free agent next summer.
Lehner, 25, is set to be a restricted free agent July 1, while Reinhart, 21, is entering the last year of his entry-level deal.
Botterill is evaluating his goaltending options around the NHL to see if an upgrade between the pipes is available.
Some have connected the Sabres to Pittsburgh Penguins netminder Marc-Andre Fleury, but the Sabres are one of the 12 teams on his no-trade list. Whether he's willing to reconsider remains to be seen.
Reinhart, drafted second-overall in 2014, could be dangled as trade bait for a top-pair defenseman, as the Sabres want to improve their defensive corps for next season.

I'm guessing the NHL did it on purpose as QOs don't HAVE to be in until before 7/1, so they didn't force teams that didn't want to lose RFAs to potentially lose them because they were re-signed or qualified.
Obviously teams like the Caps qualified Grubauer so they could expose him. Although they could've just signed some schmuck that's been in the league a while. What's Michael Leighton up to? I'm sure he'd sign a deal to get a couple bucks. - Wetbandit1
Even if they signed "leighton" or whoever...
Grubauer still would've been exposed
This is getting tiresome

Can't believe this didn't make it's way here today. Read this on HFBoards.
"Bob McKenzie was on Leafs Lunch today, and said he's heard Pysyk connected to the Leafs and he's heard Kerby Rychel as part of the return.
After the article on SN speculating Pysyk to the Leafs (Carrick, Rychel, 2nd) and now Bobby Mac said he's heard something around Rychel/Pysyk, it seems like a "where there is smoke.." situation."
If this happens we'll never get rid of him |

I just used it as an example we were talking about. If they signed some bum they wouldn't have to expose Holtby or Grubauer. As long as a guy has 3 years experience pro it doesn't matter, hell, Hasek would do it, but I would bet a lot of money that the NHL wouldn't let them do that as it's totally circumvention. |

I'm assuming you meant dealt or protected. But if Lehner gets dealt we're (frank)ed and have no one to expose(well, Ullmark, but then Kransdorf has the most NA experience) unless we also made a trade for another goalie. If Lehner gets dealt it will be after expansion, or a goalie would be coming back that we would be able to expose. But that's a lot of moving parts to get done in like 12 hours. And if one of the deals falls through for some reason then we're (frank)ed. |

For those that mentioned Nate Schmidt and Depres, agreed as I feel those are the smaller moves the new GM will go for while trying to offload at least one of the bad contracts so he has a season under his belt and Housley's to better assess each player. |

Patrick Kane will never come here. With everything that went down with the alleged rape, he would literally have to walk around town with a body guard at all times. Then again, I am not sure if he has a no-trade clause... |
