I dont think dumba is very good. he might be, so might one of the guys we draft, and he'll cost less.

He isn't as good as people seem to think.

difference here as well is a) these guys available for trade are low end top four guys and b) the ceiling on the prospects is much higher
- Sabresfan-365

The floor is also much lower

Let's look at the 2008 draft
Was widely stated as one of the deepest defensemen drafts

2- Doughty(LA)..... top pair star
3- Bogosian(Atlanta)..... bottom pair
4- Pietrangelo(StL)..... top pair star
5- Schenn(Toronto)..... bottom pair
12- Myers(Buffalo)..... 4/5
13- Teubert(LA)..... bottom pair
15- Karlsson(Ottawa)..... top pair star
17- Gardiner(Anaheim)..... 2nd pair
19- Sbisa(Philly)..... bottom pair
20- Del Zotto(NyR)..... 4/5
23- Kuma(Minny)..... bust
27- Carlson(Wash)..... top pair

For the sake of argument...
I'm saying we can trade (hopefully) for Dumba/Vatanen type player
If not, I wouldn't trade #8

Imo...
Doughty, Pietrangelo, Karlsson & Carlson...
are better than what we could trade for

everyone else is worse (maybe u could argue Gardner)

That's 8 guys worse, compared to 4 guys better
So that TWICE as much chance as a "bust" as it would be a "difference maker"

Waiting 3 years to hope we get lucky seems like a bad idea to me

There's a better chance he'll be worse
And we'll have to wait 3-5 years to find out

U seem to only be taking into account the best case scenario for someone we'd draft this year & next

im not saying theres no risk involved, im saying id rather take that risk because the upside is higher which is a fact.

I get that we could make these trades now and probably become a playoff team. but that would be it. wed be tapped out on assets, short a few core players and these guys would be due raises in a few years. We'd be this decades rangers. Didnt tank for that poop

2-3 years and yea call me an optimist but id like to think a smart guy like botterill will be able to find someone who can be developed into a top 2 or 3 guy.

It's not only "risk" though...
it's also wasted time waiting

If we were gonna pick top5, I'd be with ya
But look at those guys & tell me the difference between guys chosen 8-20
It's all over the board
And it's like that EVERY draft

Most GMs are "smart guys"
Every team picks guy who don't end up developing
Especially into the level of player you're talking about

I'm 50/50 on this.

Part of me thinks that Ristolainen is not a #1, and we need to either draft, or trade for a true #1 to be eventually contending for a cup. That might be the '18 draft

Other half of me thinks that if we can just put together a really strong top 4, we can contend. But that means 3 or 4 guys with Risto's upside.

This is part of the reason I want a lot of cap flexibility down the road. IN 2-3 years we might be having the same convo about needing a top pair guy, because drafting doesn't always work

It's a lot of luck involved.

Imagine taking Risto instead of Nurse.

We in media have all been speculating those teams likely to incl ANA, CBJ, CHI, NYI, PIT, TB but now belief is MIN and FLA may be added.

yea this has gone circular for long enough its whatever i just think drafting and developing our own guys is the way to go.

We may be close to the playoffs (thanks to parity and hard cap everyone is) but were nowhere close to cup contention till we add core players. so id rather they just wait till they have the assets to trade for one when one becomes available or draft their own.

They botched this from the start. a simple cap rule on vegas with regards to picks or moves or whatever could have allowed for an exciting lead up to this draft. instead Vegas will make every third pick on friday and the biggest name moved will be calvin de haan or something

Who do u think is available?

How about Dumba?
Picked 7th overall

- jdfitz77

I don't watch a lot of Minni games but not sure I like him a whole bunch, lots of offensive upside but his defence leaves a lot to be desired and he seems to make some bone head plays.

Not sure where he was picked means a whole lot.

Those Vegas jerseys are atrocious.

I'm ok with the Sabres jerseys, would've preferred a brighter blue, but no piping and pit stains is a great start. The Devils look just plain weird.
