Yeah, but he was actually, legitimately hurt and his career was over.

Which to me, says he should have been forced to retire. But Philly couldn't afford for that to happen, so they just parked him on LTIR and then somehow managed to trade that contract to someone else who in turn, did the same thing.

Its the NHL, they are an amateur run league. Are you surprised? If you think it is a good idea, think the opposite and that is what the NHL will most likely do.

The NHL is a joke show.

The Hawks will circumvent the cap for the what, 3rd or 4th time?

The expansion draft is turning into a complete joke.

Just wait until Kovalchuk goes and plays for Chicago for the 5 mil that should have been used on Hossa

So this works when something (not expecting) causes an injury to a player, what about if the player (not expecting it) drops off and plays like he is injured (but is not), can we get the same deal for him? (I am looking at you Moulson, lol) It is complete garbage. They made some crazy 12 year deal, get the best of it (his best years) and then cry mercy when something happens? NO YOU LIVE WITH THAT!

Oh how convenient that even though his cap hit is like $5.25 mil, his salary drops to $1 mil for the rest of his contract. Weird timing, right?

I'm at the point where I am like F*ck it, sign everyone.

Re-sign Kane, go after Shattenkirk, and we will find a way to circumvent it

most of these are premeditated circumvents.. they knew what they were doing in both instance. but you know that buffalo wont be able to get away with it. its basically only original 6 and a few other select teams that can do this crap and get away with it easily.

Thats my largest problem with it. They knew they were doing something terribly goofy to get his cap hit to be lower (while still paying the player) and now they get away with it after winning cups and his age is getting up there (38)? No way. Stupid.

if Okposo's scare was enough to render his career over, would Sabres have the same relief as the Hawks? "ailment"?

Here we go again...

Friedman notes that if Hossa were to officially retire, the Blackhawks would be levied cap recapture penalties on the heavily front-loaded contract they brokered with the veteran forward in 2009. This, of course, would be devastating for a franchise constantly at odds with the NHL’s salary parameters.

But if Hossa were to agree to be placed on long-term injury reserve each season until that deal expires, his cost wouldn’t count against the salary cap and the transaction would in turn alleviate the unrelenting financial pressure on management.

- kingcong39

Just out of curiosity, does that count for Parise as well?

The one part of it that seems odd to me, is the timing in a lot of ways. Hossa's play hasn't exactly dropped off the cliff yet. He still had 45 points and was still the defensive pain in the ass he's always been.

More importantly, this is why I never lend too much credence to "Team X is up against the cap...they're screwed". People have been doing creative things with money since the beginning of time. Don't forget what Detroit did with Datsyuk's contract last summer.

I believe so. They could have put him on LTIR each year for the last 6 years of his contract.

YOu do have to remember that only so much $$ can be buried on LTIR though. So it can get tricky when you know there's going to be a player taking up a decent chunk of that year over year.

Well, some teams actually are screwed. Whether that's a lack of creativity on their end, or whatever, the LA Kings come to mind.

They literally are up against the cap every year and haven't been able to sign any big time FA's in a few years

I still believe that Richards incident at the border was staged. He had something illegal in his car, but not enough to actually get in legal trouble

I think it is very premature to accuse the hawks of that. From what I've read this kind of issue does happen.

I don't know. Because that didn't really work out for them right from the start. They had to fight the NHLPA on it. They very well could have lost that battle and ended up having to keep him.

I don't doubt Hossa has an issue.

I severely doubt that he's planning on sitting a year and coming back at 40 yo.

He's done. But will not officially retire to help the Hawks

Are you kidding me?

What a heist. I'd rather have Theodore than either of the above.

- sbroads24

Ennis and 2018 second to LV for Theodore. BOOM.

Vegas has already explained that will take more defenders than they need and use those assets as currency to round out the roster.

They definitely made a show of it and portrayed i5 that way. In the end, Richards got like 65% of his salary and didn't have to play in the minors. The kings got cap relief. I think the whole thing was a charade

I'd keep Ennis, and give them one of Fasching/Bailey/Baptitste + 2nd
