I don't doubt Hossa has an issue.

I severely doubt that he's planning on sitting a year and coming back at 40 yo.

He's done. But will not officially retire to help the Hawks

- sbroads24

Hawks are either screwed or more screwed.

If he doesn't retire, they can hide his cap in LTIR.

If he does retire, they need to pay a cap penalty of like 4.5 million or around there.

They definitely made a show of it and portrayed i5 that way. In the end, Richards got like 65% of his salary and didn't have to play in the minors. The kings got cap relief. I think the whole thing was a charade
- jcragcrumple

I don't know. That's an awful lot of moving parts and a TON of people involved. Seems a bit far fetched in this case. They got lucky that it worked out for them from a cap standpoint, but it could have easily ended up the other way as well.

That's what they are avoiding.

If this was another player, I'd reserve judgment. But of course it's Hossa, who signed a 12 year contract, which is no longer allowed, and then will conveniently only have to pay 1mil per in actual cash, while hiding a 5 mil cap hit.

I'd keep Ennis, and give them one of Fasching/Bailey/Baptitste + 2nd
- sbroads24

Ennis is going to either be good or terrible. that could be a risk worth taking.. not sure i want to move baptiste i think he has the highest ceiling

I love the wheels Baptiste has. If he can find his scoring touch at the NHL level, he could be a really nice compliment to Eichel.

Hossa doesn't get paid if he retires.

This whole thing was a thing when Drury retired. He screwed himself and the Rags.

Marian Hossa may decide to retire from the NHL, according to Sportsnet's Elliotte Friedman.
Hossa was still relatively productive last season, as he scored 26 goals and 45 points in 73 games with the Blackhawks. Unfortunately for the veteran, he's allergic to the equipment he wears. Friedman mentioned that the medication used to treat the allergy is so strong that doctors wanted Hossa to have his blood tested every few weeks. If the 38-year-old is forced to hang up his skates because of the allergy, it would be a sad way to see him go. Hossa's consistently been one of the best players in the world over the last 15 years.

I'd keep Ennis, and give them Fasching and Moulson or Bogosian (retaining $2mil) + 2nd for Shea
- sbroads24

fixed this for you.

I would even eat $3 million on one of those mentioned players if it moved them.

Sure, but he's already been paid about 90% of his 58 mil contract.

I mean, I get it from Hossa's standpoint. But it's incredible timing

He's been one of my favorites to watch for years because of how effective he's been in every facet of the game. For as good as he has been in his career offensively, he's even better defensively. You don't see that a lot.

The worst case scenario for both parties was the status quo. Richards would get more money, yeah, but he already had a ton and he would have to ride the bus. At the very least, it's shady that the team voided the contract for such a minor thing. Maybe you're right, I just don't trust this league at all

How convenient that all of a sudden when the Hawks have literally no cap space, his equipment gives him allergies.

Hossa, 38, scored 26 goals and tallied 45 points in 73 games this season. He is signed through 2020-21 at a cap hit of $5.275 million, though his actual salary for each of the next four seasons sits at $1 million.

The Hawks lucked out. They're over the cap every year, and they've dealt/lost a lot of good players over the years to keep themselves under. Buff, Ladd, Saad, Teravainen, Sharp, Shaw, Oduya, Leddy...

This time around, they lucked out and won't have to pay someone to take a big contract.

As for Hossa, yeah he's gotten most of his money, but who the (frank) leaves 4 million bucks on the table? I sure as poop wouldn't. Especially since in all likelyhood, you'll never earn that kind of money again.

yeah yeah, he's been paid an ass-ton. He has zero reason to retire. It's 4M for doing nothing. Nothing.

Best way to put it..

Sure the timing is good for the hawks but hossa is still a solid top6 guy that they need to replace.

For all we know, Hossa wants to retire.

It's just too convenient, especially when it seems there run of dominance is over, and his contract has close to been paid.
