I'm demonstrating to you that picks, along with players Mcphee didn't want, protects players he does want.
Thorburn + picks = protecting young guys
Cartier + picks = protecting ullmark - jcragcrumple
good lord getting a 6th rd pick is almost meaningless. comparing apples and oranges between the 2 moves.

He specifically said at the draft yesterday he was looking at 2 players on our list. He was given the 6th round pick to sway him to go with one guy over the other at the request of Botterill.
and I already explained in a previous post that Ullmark would be preferable over Pickard. I'm not typing it out again. you want to know my reasoning, go back and actually read what I already said once. - HonkFortheGoose
ok he was looking at 2 players. clearly he didn't favor 1 that much more over the other. is that not a fair statement? |

$10 says they had no real interest in either Carrier or Ullmark. If hey really had an interest in Ullmark they would have asked for more than a 6th. - Slump Buster
Maybe not. But I think Botts did have an interest in protecting Ullmark, and threw the 6th in there to make sure it was Carrier who they took. |

Would anyone here really be opposed to Reinhart being the main piece going away in a trade for Duchene or Landeskog???
Eberle can be had for much less but for those two... I wouldn't have a problem with it. Who knows how well they'd get along with ROR. Don't know if they had beef or not. |

Correct, that is a win for bots. I am a little surprised that GMGM didn't ask for more as obviously we have no depth there. |

Its a 6th round pick.... its security.
How many 6th rounders hit it big??? Lol. We kept Ullmark a goalie who we badly need because we are bare thin at the position and lost a bottom 6 winger who we have 16 others of. |

that's your opinion clearly. If he wanted they goalie that badly he gets more than that or he takes the goalie. Though I am sure your 100% correct on the matter. - rinaldo
Ullmark, to McPhee, was worth Carrier and a 6th. That much is a certainty. |

Sure. I can get behind this. I think that Buffalo's GM wanted to protect Ullmark, and since McPhee was indifferent, took the 6th. There's two ways to look at it: Botts wanted to protect a player, OR McPhee wanted to take a player. Either way, if said player should remain on the team he is on, that team will have to pay to keep him. If Botts wants to keep him, the value is less. If McPhee wants him, the value would be more. Economics finally pays off. |

This. Exactly this.
Losing a winger at this stage is better for us than losing a goalie that's about to make the jump to the NHL as a full time backup and have spent how many years developing.
There were aspects of Carrier's game that I liked, but I'm not upset about losing him. I would have been more upset losing Ullmark.
Honestly, I think if Botterill had been the GM for more than just a few weeks, I wouldn't have been surprised to see him actually leave Lehner out there and call McPhee's bluff. I doubt he would have been taken, based on the fact that he had an agreement in place to take Fleury already that was widely known even to us fans. |

Carrier had already been passed over on the organizational depth chart by
Bailey
Baptiste
Nylander
Fasching
Maybe even Smith and Olofsson... Hagel? All could replace him.

Re-read the conversation. There's absolutely no reason to protect Ennis and not Carrier. - TheSabresTaco
There is a reason.
One *was* an actual good player at some point, who might be better under another coach
Other is an average bottom 6 guy to this point, and who knows if he ever becomes more |
