Im actually starting to think Vilardi could fall to us. Would be intriguing and hard to pass up
Gut says we end up with one of the following:
Tippett
Liljegren
Makar(not at 8 though) - MCGUIZZY
Would you call Vilardi "The Fall Guy"?

If I'm the sabres gm for a day this is what I do:
Trade #8 and Kane to Dallas for #3
Trade #3 and girgs to NJ for #1 and take Patrick or Nico. Nj needs centers but want makar, this gives them both.
Trade a 2nd and larrsons (or similar) to LV for Neil
Trade Reinhart for Hanifin (Jack's best friend)
Some of this might not be equitable, but I don't think it's too far off - turbo044
you are not getting #1 for girgs and #3
There are more signs of devil's going center with the #1 pick, pretty much the only person who said makar was some random guy at espn and even then he said the devils would trade down if that was the case and it would have to be a trade that the devils get big assets back |

Not surprising, but here it is from the horse's mouth.

Going to cost a lot more than that for Hanifin or as Garth likes to say Hanifan. - Matthews_Auston
You may be right, though, they were drafted in similar spots and both teams need the other player more than the current team does. It would be a good hockey trade for both teams. |

Would've been nice if Botts could've made this happen. |

Time to change the rules. If you don't sign with the team who drafted you by the deadline you go back into the next years draft |

Don't worry, when and only when the college loophole affects one of the NHL's darling teams such as the Pens or Hawks, will they close said loophole. Until then, they're more than happy to allow top talent to go to already established teams with no ill effect.
Meanwhile, the NHL will continue to screw the lottery percentages so teams who need help won't receive the help they need to build all the while trying to prevent tanking (which only has encouraged more tanking, as teams sitting at 11,12,13 saw how the flyers jumped, so why not tank to try and get into a better position for a legitimate chance to jump x amount of spots, not too mention NJ jumping to the top, all the while the yotes getting screwed yet again)
Finally, we'll add more teams to thin out the talent and force those teams who already have little, to decide who give up, when they may not have much to begin with.
rant over

Should the Sabres start to avoid drafting college players? Unless it's a top-end guy that it is known will not finish his college career (Eichel), seems pretty risky. |

I think the solution should be:
The team that loses the player gets a compensatory pick from the team that signs them |

I'd imagine a lot of organizations will start to steer clear of them, unless they are well established contenders. Then again, the more teams pass on those kids, the more likely they just naturally fall to a contender to which they will have no problem signing with. |

or like NCAA: you lose one year of eligibility. No AHL, CHL etc. nothing but practice with the team and collect a paycheck. Red-shirted I suppose might be the right analogy |

Well the thinking behind the draft pick is:
if they make the compensatory pick high enough (1st or 2nd depending on original draft status), then most if not all teams will avoid it and forces the player to sign due to no other options. |

Gotcha. Yeah, I'd be all for something along those lines as well. It's really only going to get worse before it gets better, but let's hope it's capped soon. Imagine Eichel saying "I love the pens. Screw the draft, I'll just wait 30 days and sign, then boom 5 peat" |

I love how all the comments suggest reinhart and kane are expendable
who scores the goals when they are moved
ennis?
foligno? - homiedclown
If anyone expects Ennis to contribute anything this season, they're high.
Botterill has an absolute ton to do: still on the roster are Bogosian, Gorges, Ennis, Moulson. Girgensons doesn't score goals. Antipin and the Hab will help. And they're seemingly trading Evander Kane?
Season has disaster written all over it. |

I think this is true and it's a little disheartening. Unless the team's struggles were mostly a problem with coaching, Sabres could very well be drafting at 8 a year from now.
But, I will talk myself into whoever we draft, and before the season starts, I'll be convinced we're a playoff team. |
