It's a ridiculous contract for a guy turning 30 - PhillySportsGuy
Exactly. I felt zero need to comment on it, honestly, because it's so obvious what this league is now -- young players who can skate, older players who wear down and eventually can't -- that anyone who wants to argue that a 36-year-old forward's potential for productivity is something you bet on...hey, good luck with that

He will be a solid replacement for McDavid when we offer him an 8 year, $200M deal |

Edmonton will be so fun with that top 6. At least Kailer will look great there. Like Keller going to Yotes, could be way way worse. |

I don't know who they were negotiating against. That deal is like 4 years too long |

The only explanation, other than drunkenness, is that the Oshie deal is a "win now" move.
Even that, though, this feels like wild overpayment in a year where the dude has a shooting percentage over 20. No (frank)ing way he repeats that. |

They really value character and compete and both are big knocks on Vesalainen. Pointless now. |

I dunno. I thought earlier today was pretty cool, with all the trades Chicago did and the big NY trade.
I view this a bit differently.
Economically, it just makes sense to do your best to scout, draft, and develop your own players rather than overpay for other team's players. Scouting and development staff aren't counted against the cap and the first few years of a good player's career are under team control at minimal cost. - johndewar
See, the one thing you mention there about the team control is something that bothers me
The NHL, out of all the major leagues, gets to keep the rights of its drafted players the longest and has built-in salary controls for the first and second contracts, should a team opt to exercise them
But now, teams sit there and won't bridge guys, even though they don't get arbitration rights until their fifth year
How the Flyers handled Brayden Schenn, to me, is exactly how players should be handled -- let them get to the year before their walk year, and then decide if you want to keep them or not. But don't give them 6x6 when they're coming out of their ELC
You'd see a little more movement if guys weren't making $5 million and still weren't consistent

It just came out that he didn't get admitted to Boston College. I can't think that would have that much of an effect. Watch him fall to the Hawks here. |

I still think baseball might have a more stringent idea of team control than hockey, but I think hockey is catching on.
I do think "team control" of a player plays a part in many GMs decisions and I think Hextall definitely thinks of it.
