I definitely wouldn't have wanted to spend 2 firsts, but I am a little disappointed to see that this pick wasn't traded for a player more useful right now. I don't see a lot of great free agency options out there for that #4 defenceman or a higher end RW, at least not with the contract that it will take for them. And after this first round pick (especially without a 2nd or a 3rd) the tradable (or at least ones that I would be willing to part with) assets is massively diminished.

As a whole not a great last couple days. No cap relief of any kind from the expansion draft. Not able to make a trade for a player that can significantly step in now. Not terrible and how it works out, but I was admittedly hoping for something more.

Maybe they will pull something off, but I do have a little concern for next season now. Or at least in their ability to show a next step forward.

Do people still see a workable trade out there? Or is it the UFA route now.

after drafting valimaki I am wondering if one of our d prospects are now a trade chip for some more help right now. between fox, kylington, fat rass kulak and valimaki we now have great depth in defensive prospects. is one of them expandable and which one? I would lean to fox because his value is high after last season and the ncaa route is always a scary route to go down

Agreed! Just hope it's not fat rass or Kylington. Anyone but those 2.

Same price as DH. 1st and 2 2nds. Flames also get a 4th back.

Given that we used our 1st, and in an offensive d, I would be stunned if it's not Kylington, Dube and our 1st next year, or something along that line...

What is missing outside of RW for prospects? I think they are betting on a Brouwer bounceback now. I like this roster, perhaps exposing him gets his engine going. Bennett Janko Versteeg / Lazar is a good 3rd line, assuming one of Ferland or Brouwer can play 1RW consistently.

Brouwer on the 1st line is gonna be a mistake (again). With the moves the Flames have made, acquiring a no. 3 D and drafting a potential top-4 D, I'd be comfortable with them moving a higher end prospect for a top line RW.

I still want Neal. Or Hornqvist. Or Gallagher.

Sure is a high price but he does have a favourable contract. I wonder how much less it would have cost to Getz Jason Demers from Florida. Friedman reported that he is available too.
